TV seeking to pair Woods, Sorenstam
By DAVE HACKENBERG
Toledo Blade
Annika Sorenstam confirmed last week that negotiations are under
way for her to team with Tiger Woods in a made-for-TV team match
against David Duval and Karrie Webb.
All four golfers are represented by IMG, a Cleveland-based player-agent
firm, and the event would be tailored after the prime-time Battle
of Bighorn that matched Woods and Sergio Garcia late last summer.
It was suggested to Sorenstam that she should team with Duval
since they are two of only four golfers (PGA and LPGA tours combined)
to have scored rounds of 59 in competition.
But I want to play with Tiger, she said, laughing.
It would be a great opportunity for me to see him play in
person, in the same group. To have him as a partner, on top of
that, would be a dream scenario for me.
Sorenstam said she didn't know how close the foursome is to signing
a contract, but said such an event would be a boost for women's
golf.
Yeah, at least for a day, she said in Beavercreek,
Ohio, where she played in the LPGA Champions Classic. People
would be able to see that Karrie and I can play some good golf.
Webb said timing is a concern because the only date all four golfers
appear to have open is the Monday (July 30) prior to the Women's
British Open at Sunningdale in Berkshire, England.
It's not the best way to start the week of a major championship,
especially with all the travel involved, she said. But
I don't think we can turn down an opportunity like this.
