SAN DIEGO
Tiger Woods needed a 6-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to make
the Buick Invitational cut, but two-time defending champion Phil
Mickelson wasnt as lucky Friday and will miss the weekend
rounds of his hometown tournament.
Woods and Mickelson
grew up playing Torrey Pines and dominated the last three Buicks.
But the worlds top two golfers found out that the South
Course wasnt nearly as familiar as it used to be. Local
officials spent $3.3 million to make the course longer and tougher
in an attempt to secure the 2008 U.S. Open.
Woods played the
South Course in 5-over 77 on Friday after shooting a 6-under 66
on the North Course on Thursday, which had left him two strokes
behind first-round leader Mathew Goggin. The cut came at 1-under
143, which is right where Woods was.
J.L. Lewis and Kent
Jones had no trouble on the South on Friday, both shooting 5-under
67s to share the second-round lead at 9-under 135. Jones was bogey-free.
Jay Haas and Mark
OMeara, who like Lewis are in their 40s, were tied with
Rory Sabbatini at 136. Haas, the 1978 Buick winner, shot 68; OMeara,
the 97 winner, a 69; and Sabbatini a 66, all on the North.
ACE Group Classic
NAPLES, Fla.
Tom Watson had a hole-in-one in a round of 8-under 64 to take
a one-stroke lead over Dana Quigley in the Senior PGA Tour's ACE
Group Classic.
Ben Crenshaw shot
a 76 in his senior tour debut, hitting into the water on the final
two holes en route to a bogey on the par-5 No. 17 and quadruple
bogey on the par-4 18th.
Watson birdied Nos.
10, 11 and 14 to reach 5 under, then aced the 163-yard, par-3
16th with a 6-iron and followed with a 25-foot birdie putt on
No. 17. He also saved par on No. 8, holing a 20-footer after hitting
into a bunker.
Jim Thorpe was two
strokes back after a 68, and 1999 winner Allen Doyle followed
at 67. Hale Irwin was four back at 68 along with Don Pooley, Sammy
Rachels, Tom Jenkins and Dick Mast. Senior rookies Fuzzy Zoeller
and Tom Purtzer shot 71s.

Fifteen players were
unable to complete the round because of rain.
