Tiger to play Japanese tournament

PALM DESERT, Calif. (AP) — Tiger Woods said Sunday he will play the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament this fall, his first stroke-play tournament in Japan in four years.

“They sure love their golf, and I'm excited to be coming back,” Woods said after a brief practice round at Bighorn Golf Club.

The Dunlop Phoenix is Nov. 21-24 at Phoenix Country Club in Miyazaki. David Duval is the defending champion, and Sergio Garcia also is expected to play.

Woods and Duval were teammates last year in Japan in the World Cup. Woods chipped in for eagle on the 18th hole to get into a playoff, won by the South African team of Ernie Els and Retief Goosen.

Woods last played a stroke-play tournament in Japan in 1998, when he tied for 15th in the Casio Open.
