Woods makes charge before play suspended

Associated Press

PARAPARAUMU BEACH, New Zealand — Tiger Woods made up three strokes on the New Zealand Open leaders early this morning before play was suspended because of rain following his tee shot on the 12th hole.

Woods and playing partner Martin Pettigrew of New Zealand started the round as heavy rain hit the Paraparaumu Beach course, reducing visibility and making conditions close to unplayable.

Woods was 3 under for the round and 2 under for the tournament when play was suspended because of flooded greens and fairways.

Australians James McLean and Stephen Leaney, the second-round leaders at 7-under 135, had yet to tee off when play was stopped.

The American star got off to a terrible start in the rain with a double bogey on the opening hole. He hit his tee shot into the right rough and needed four shots to get to the green.

He birdied the second and fourth holes and made an 8-foot eagle putt on No. 6 after driving the green on the 310-yard, par-4 hole. After settling for par on the par-5 seventh, he made a curling 10-foot birdie putt on No. 8.

Sony Open

HONOLULU — John Cook shot an 8-under-par 62 on Friday to match his career-low round in 23 years on the PGA Tour and take a four-stroke lead in the Sony Open.

With half of the field still on the course in breezy, balmy conditions, Cook was at 12-under 128 to tie the 36-hole record at Waialae Country Club. It was last matched a year ago by Brad Faxon, who went on to win by four strokes.

It also set a course record at Waialae since it was last redesigned to play as a par 70. Davis Love III has the Waialae record of 12-under 60, set in 1994.

South African Open

DURBAN, South Africa — South Africa’s James Kingston shot a 5-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead over Englishmen Jonathan Lomas and Andrew Butterfield in the South African Open.

Kingston had an 11-under 133 total on the Durban Country Club course.

Lomas shot a 67, and Butterfield had a 69.

U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen of South Africa was four strokes back after a 70, and countryman Ernie Els was nine back after a 69.
