Kyker honored with Trailblazer Award

By ROY A. JONES II

Senior Staff Writer

Chris Kyker of Abilene, a champion of the aging for three decades, was honored Tuesday with the Trailblazer Award by the Texas Joint Conference on Aging.

JCOA's Leadership Award went to Poppy Hulsey of Tulia.

The two women were honored at the organization's "Denim and Lace" banquet at the Abilene Civic Center. Featured speaker was Dr. James P. Firman, president and CEO of the National Council on the Aging.

The Trailblazer Award is presented to one who has made a significant contribution, with statewide impact, to aging services, conference committee chairman Walter C. Graham of Abilene explained.

Kyker has been executive director of the Abilene Mental Health Association, founding director of the West Central Texas Council of Governments Area Agency of Aging, coordinator of aging for the Governor's Committee on Aging, founding executive director of the Texas Department on Aging, program specialist for Family and Children Services for the Texas Department of Human Services, and founding president and chief executive officer for Disability Resources. She currently serves as a consultant for organization and development for Rainbow Omega.

She has been a representative to the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature and was the Texas state coordinator for the 1981 White House Conference on Aging.

Hulsey was honored for many significant contributions to her community and state. She has been recognized for her work with the Salvation Army, National Missions of the Presbyterian Church, Amarillo College, Tulia Senior Center and Swisher County Archives.

She served 12 years on the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission and four terms in the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature. She has been an AARP volunteer for nine years and just completed a term as state director. She is a senior volunteer for the attorney general's office and served on the Texas Department on Aging's Elder Rights Committee.
