"Broad overview" of middle school
programs scheduled
By JONATHAN KRYDER
Staff Writer
The Abilene school board's "broad overview" today
of middle school programs precedes a seven-session checkup through
March on the district's middle-agers.
Superintendent Charles Hundley and seven middle school principals
will present the review to the district trustees, who will meet
at 5:30 p.m. at Madison Middle School, 3145 Barrow St., instead
of the usual board room.
More thorough, future reviews are scheduled at seven middle
school campuses to inform the board of curricular needs and achievements
of each campus.
The district scrapped junior high schools for middle schools
12 years ago when trustees realized a need for schools where children
have time to grow up, Hundley said.
"The (middle school) concept is more of a gradual transition"
from elementary school to high school, he said, because, "in
essence, a junior high school is more like a small high school."
Besides shifting sixth-graders from elementary school and ninth-graders
to high school, middle schools provided "less emphasis on
extracurricular activities and more emphasis on core subjects,"
Hundley said.
At the meeting, trustees will also consider appointment of
a textbook selection committee, comprised of more than 50 district
educators, with Hundley serving as chairman.
The committee will choose from a list of books recommended
by the State Board of Education. This year's purchases pertain
to nine disciplines: biology, fine arts, language arts, French,
Latin, business and computer technology, geometry and algebra
I and II.
