Newspaper staff wins nine statewide awards
Abilene Reporter-News staffers won nine statewide awards this
weekend, with senior editor Jeff Wolf taking first place in editorial
writing.
Wolf was recognized for editorials he wrote about opera, humane
treatment of pets, and death with dignity.
Other awards announced at the Texas Associated Press Managing
Editors Association convention were:
-- Richard Horn and Loretta Fulton, second place, investigative
reporting for their articles about the House of Yahweh.
-- Ken Ellsworth, second place, photojournalism for pictures
and story about a blind girl in Trent.
-- Greg Jaklewicz, second place, comment and criticism, for
articles about musicians Junior Medlow, Gary Morris and Larry
Nix.
-- Kathleen Whitmire, second place, headline writing, for "Coleman
plant seeks next of kiln to continue expansion;" "It's
the end of the universe as we know it," and "New name
to rise from El Fenix ashes."
-- Staff, second place, feature series for the six-month series
on Family Traditions. Senior editor Carol Lackey headed a team
of writers, designers and photographers who produced the 20-part
series. Team members included Robin Saylor, Loretta Fulton, Bill
Whitaker, Brian Bethel, Richard Horn, J.T. Smith, Tanya Eiserer,
Leslie Strader, Greg Jaklewicz, Doug Williamson, Ken Ellsworth,
Roy Jones, Pamela Percival, Jason Newman, Gerald Ewing, David
Kent and Don Blakley.
-- Richard Horn, honorable mention, specialty reporting for
three articles about the 1996 political campaigns.
-- Jeff Wolf, honorable mention, comment and criticism, for
three articles about opera.
-- Layne Smith, honorable mention, infographics, for a graphic
look at a day in the life of Abilene in 2001.
Chrissie McMennamy, former Reporter-News staff writer, won
the sweepstates award for smaller daily papers, along with first
place for short features and second place in spot news. She was
working at the Pasadena Citizen when she wrote the stories.
Former Reporter-News photographer David Leeson won first place
in spot news photography. Leeson is a staff photographer with
the Dallas Morning News.
Joel Shuler, a former Abilene resident and staff writer for
the <I>San Angelo Standard Times<I>, and Steve Ray,
head of the Harte-Hanks Newspapers Austin Bureau, won two first
place awards for investigative reporting and Freedom of Information
Act reporting. Their winning entries were a series of stories
on questionable spending practices at some of the state's councils
of governments.
Also at the meeting, Reporter-News Editor Glenn Dromgoole completed
his term as president of the Texas APME group.
