Cowboy poet, novelist entertains crowd
By BILLY HARRIS

BELLE PLAIN - Cowboy poet Sam Davis and cowboy novelist Elmer
Kelton entertained a crowd of 150 at the Belle Plain Cemetery
Association's Memorial Day gathering on Monday.
Davis regaled his audience with amusing stories, including
one about a French journalist who got his induction into the cowboy
way of life with a meal of "calf fries."
Kelton, author of many novels about cowboy life in Texas and
elsewhere, recalled that some of his forebears settled in Callahan
County around 1877, where his grandfather was born.
Maggie Cook, 97, was honored as the oldest-living guest, and
2-week-old Morgan Brooks Seals was the youngest.
Six planes of the Big Country squadron of the Confederate Air
Force flew over, and Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the Dyess Air
Force Base Color Guard took part in a flag ceremony.
Nancy Robinson, aviation columnist of the Abilene Reporter-News,
was emcee of the event under the post oaks eight miles south of
Baird.
