Three jailed after search reveals drugs, stolen property

By WILLIAM DILLARD / Correspondent

BROWNWOOD - Three people were jailed Monday after detectives found drugs and stolen property at a house just north of the city limits.

Brown County sheriff's detectives Billy Arp, Brian Thompson and Lt. Mike McCoy went to the house at 608 Ash St. with a warrant to arrest Paul Allen Boykin, 25.

Paula Sue James, 21, who lives at the address, told officers he was not there, and gave permission to search the house for him. During the search, McCoy said he saw a marijuana plant through an open window.

"After finding the plant, we also found some marijuana in baggies, and several items of drug paraphernalia, and some other items that are believed to possibly be stolen in some recent burglaries," Arp said.

Several bags of fireworks were confiscated that may have been taken from break-ins at firework stands around Brownwood earlier this month.

James and Clayton Lawrence Ford, also 21, were arrested for felony possession of marijuana over 4 ounces.

Boykin was not found at the residence, but Chief Deputy Scott Martin found him a few minutes later at the Brown County Courthouse and arrested him, also for felony possession of marijuana over 4 ounces.

Bond was set at $3,000 for James and Ford. James was released Tuesday. Boykin, who was arrested earlier this year for allegedly participating in an eight-county burglary spree, remains in jail on bonds totaling $12,000.
