County prosecutor seeking appeals post
BY RICHARD HORN Staff Writer
Comanche County Attorney Terry McCall said Monday he's running
for the 11th Court of Appeals in Eastland.
McCall, elected county attorney in 1992 and re-elected last
year, will seek the Republican nomination for the post now held
by Associate Justice Bob Dickenson of Abilene, who is retiring
after having served on the court since 1978.
"My experience as a criminal prosecutor, county elected
official, businessman and rancher gives me a breadth of experience
that is truly unique," McCall said. "Like the court,
my judicial philosophy is conservative. Judges should interpret
the law, follow precedent and not legislate from the bench."
McCall, a graduate of the University of Texas and UT School
of Law, said he also has substantial civil appellate law experience
before the Eastland, Austin and Fort Worth courts. He began his
law career in Houston with the Baker & Botts firm, specializing
in corporate finance and tax law.
He also has served as president and chairman of the board of
McCall Industries, Inc., a Houston-based manufacturing company.
He said his ranching experience would also be an asset, as water
and property rights become increasingly important issues.
As county attorney, McCall serves as chief juvenile prosecutor
and legal adviser to the county commissioners.
The 11th Court of Appeals is the first stop for all criminal
and civil appeals, except death penalty cases, from a 23-county
area, including Abilene.
Kollin Shadle, assistant district attorney for Taylor County,
also has announced he is seeking the GOP nomination. Abilene attorney
Randy Wilson is expected to seek the Democratic nomination.
The filing period for the March primaries begins in December.
