Merkel man announces plans to run for Taylor County commissioner seat

A retired educator from Merkel said Wednesday he will file for the Taylor County Precinct 2 commissioner seat being vacated by Don Dudley.

Nowlin D. "Corky" Cox graduated from Merkel High School in 1954 and McMurry University in 1961. He earned a master's degree in education in 1976 from Southwestern Oklahoma State University.

He was a school teacher and coach for 30 years in several West Texas towns, including Aspermont, Jayton and Peacock. He was at Merkel for four years before retiring as an assistant high school principal in 1993.

This is the first attempt at public office for Cox, who will run as a Democrat.

"I'm not dissatisfied with the way things are going," said Cox, 61. "I think the county government is doing a pretty good job.

"I probably won't change anything, but I probably won't be as visible like driving a truck, like (Dudley) did."

Filing begins Dec. 3 for the March Democratic and Republician primaries. The election is in November 1998.
