VA clinic to expand, relocate
A growing number of patients is causing the Abilene VA Community
Primary Care Clinic to expand and relocate.
But it's not going far - the new facility will be directly
behind the clinic's current location in the Abilene Regional Medical
Center Complex. The move should be complete within the next couple
of months.
"The reason we're expanding is to treat more veterans,"
said Fred Cox, community relations coordinator at the Veterans'
Affairs Commission in Big Spring. "As we're serving more
patients, we're identifying a need to expand."
The new facility, located at 6200 Regional Plaza Suite 1200,
will almost triple the clinic's space, providing 4,923 square
feet.
In addition, the clinic will add to its staff so "we'll
have an adequate staff to take care of the workload we're taking
on," Cox said.
One doctor and "appropriate support staff" will be
introduced to the clinic within the next few weeks so the staff
will be able to treat up to 1,300 more patients, he said.
The Abilene clinic opened in 1996. Before then, qualifyed local
veterans who needed medical care had to go to the Big Spring VA
Medical Center.
The facility has already moved and expanded once before in
the year and a half it's been open. Cox said the clinic keeps
enlarging because the veteran population that needs medical care
continues to increase.
