Precinct 2 commissioner's race has new entry
By BETH HALLMARK
Staff Writer
A former school board trustee from Hamby announced plans on
Monday to run for Taylor County Precinct 2 commissioner.
Danny B. Lewis, 50, filed to run as a Democrat, joining Merkel
residents Nowlin "Corky" Cox and Walt Harris in seeking
the party's nomination to the the post.
Lewis cited his experience as a member of the Hamby/Clyde Independent
School District's board of trustees from 1970 to 1994 as qualification
for the commissioner's job. He also has served on the Hamby Water
Supply Corporation board of directors since 1978.
"I want to be an active, devoted county commissioner for
the benefit of the county as a whole," Lewis said. "I'll
be a conservative-minded person where spending money is concerned,
but I will work hard to benefit the people of this county wherever
possible."
Lewis said his goals would be to keep taxes low while maintaining
the best county roads the budget would allow.
A 1966 graduate of Abilene High School, Lewis, a Vietnam veteran,
worked as the operations manager for Abilene Ag Service and Supply
for eight years before becoming a full-time farmer. He also works
in the trucking business.
Lewis is the third Democrat to file for the Precinct 2 commissioner's
post. Merkel resident Billy Bob Neff is the only Republican currently
seeking the job.
Precinct 2 Commissioner Don Dudley, who has held the post since
1982, is planning to retire at the end of his term.
The field of Democrats seeking the office should grow by one
more - David "Buster" Tarpley of Merkel is also expected
to file. The filing period for the March 10 party primaries ends
Jan. 2.
