CD flying off local shelves

By CAROL LACKEY / Abilene Reporter-News

Abilenians are helping the Elton John tribute to Princess Diana soar off the charts.

The single "Candle in the Wind 1997" could become the best-selling single of all time if sales hold steady.

Sales of the song, which was performed by Elton John at Princess Diana's funeral, began Tuesday in the United States.

All 300 CDs and 250 cassettes ordered by Hastings Books, Music and Video were reserved before they even arrived, said Renee Ersurt, Hastings music manager.

"I can't remember anything being this popular," Ersurt said. "It's just crazy. We keep getting continuous calls about it."

Ersurt said some customers are reserving two and three copies, with at least one person reserving six.

The store has ordered another 1,100 CDs and 800 cassettes, with some expected to arrive Friday.

"We already have a waiting list of more than 400 people for that shipment," Ersurt said.

Kyle Burleson, assistant manager of Blockbuster Music, said that only 20 CDs and five cassettes remain of that store's original shipment. More are expected to arrive today.

Ersurt explained that an album titled "Diana, Princess of Wales 1961-1997" will have all the music performed during the funeral on it. The album is expected to be released next week, although Ersurt is not sure if it will be available locally then.

A portion of the proceeds from "Candle in the Wind 1997" will be donated to the Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Fund.
