Museum begins search for new director
For the second time in a year, the Museums of Abilene has undertaken
a search for a new executive director.
In the interim, Dr. Jesse Fletcher was named Wednesday to serve
as consulting director, said Lee Hamilton, MOA board chairman.
Fletcher, former chancellor of Hardin-Simmons University and
well-known civic leader, agreed to provide this service while
the board searches for a permanent executive director to replace
the recently resigned John Collins.
Fletcher served as interim director before Collins was hired
last June.
"We are fortunate that Jess has agreed to help us out,"
Hamilton said. "He is familiar with the daily operations
of the museums and comes in to provide management and direction
until a new director can be found."
Hamilton said no time restrictions have been placed on that
undertaking.
Kansas man busted for marijuana possession
in Sweetwater
SWEETWATER - A Kansas man is in Nolan County Jail awaiting
arraignment on charges of felony possession with intent to distribute
marijuana valued at $77,000.
Eighty-nine pounds of a substance believed to be marijuana
were confiscated Wednesday morning during a routine traffic stop
on Interstate 20 near Sweetwater's east interchange.
Taken into custody was Salvador Anchondo Gomez, 49, of Garden
City, Kan. He was charged with the second degree felony punishable
by a sentence of two to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000.
Department of Public Safety trooper E.J. Nunez said he stopped
a 1986 Ford LTD driven by Gomez at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday. The eastbound
car was traveling at a high rate of speed, Nunez said.
Nunez said he noticed indications of narcotics when talking
with Gomez.
"The driver appeared to be nervous; there was lots of
recently dispersed air freshener and inconsistent stories,"
Nunez said.
He received both written and verbal permission to search the
vehicle.
"I started in the trunk area and found a false compartment
with lots of glue holding the carpet down over a hinged door,"
Nunez said.
The compartment held "bricks" of a substance believed
to be marijuana wrapped in brown tape, Nunez said. Gomez, the
only occupant of the car, said he was traveling from Presidio.
Arraignment is expected to take place today in Nolan County.

Paul Harvey salutes longtime Breckenridge scoutmaster
BRECKENRIDGE - Frank Pellizzari Jr. outplayed O.J. Simpson
on national radio Wednesday.
Syndicated radio and TV commentator Paul Harvey gave top billing
to President Clinton's State of the Union address on his midday
radio broadcast, but right at the top of page 2 - before any mention
of the outcome of the Simpson civil case - Harvey said he wanted
to give a heartfelt "three-finger Boy Scout salute"
to the longtime Breckenridge scoutmaster.
Harvey went on to praise Pellizzari for inspiring 77 of his
Troop 63 Boy Scouts to follow him in making Eagle Scout, scouting's
highest rank, in a scout career spanning 60 years.
