HSU student critically injured

RANGER - A Hardin-Simmons University student critically injured Sunday in a two-vehicle accident near here was moved out of the intensive care unit and was listed in "guarded" condition in Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.

An HSU official said Sarah Lynn Chamblee, a 19-year-old freshman from Denton, received a fractured skull, fractured ribs and a punctured lung in the 4:30 p.m. accident on Interstate 20. She was stabilized at Eastland Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Hendrick.

Chamblee was returning to the campus from a weekend visit with her parents. Her father, Bill Chamblee, is minister of education at First Baptist Church of Denton and is a former HSU baseball player.

Investigators said Chamblee's westbound Honda went out of control and crossed the median into the eastbound lane where it was struck broadside by a pickup driven by Rosario Villanueva Farmer, 38, of Mesquite. Farmer and his 14-year-old daughter were treated at the Eastland hospital and released.

Directors may set day for closing hospital in Albany

ALBANY - Shackelford County Hospital District directors may set a date for closing the 45-year-old hospital when they meet tonight.

Board president Bob Tidwell said he spent much of Monday with Joe Peters, a former hospital administrator from Lake Whitney who will advise the board on closure procedures. Peters will meet with the entire board tonight.

The board reluctantly voted in January to close the hospital after voters turned down a 178 percent tax increase. Directors said the increase was necessary to remain in operation.

Ban on outdoor burning tabled in Baird

BAIRD - Callahan County Commissioners on Monday tabled a ban on outdoor burning.

Recent precipitation was thought to be enough to decrease fire danger in the county. The issue will be reconsidered at the Feb. 24 meeting, said County Judge Bill Johnson.

Whether or not the county will take over maintenance on County Road 207 also was tabled because the agenda item was not worded correctly.
