Baird City Council calls special session
BAIRD - The Baird City Council has called a special meeting
for Wednesday to further discuss the suspension of Baird City
Marshal Dale Coley.
The council suspended Coley with pay on Tuesday after hearing
complaints from two parents about harassment of their children.
The council needs to review information concerning medical
insurance coverage for Coley, who remains a city employee but
with instructions to do no police work, an official said.
In other action Tuesday the council approved a $746,000 certificate
of obligation at 4.5 percent interest for 40 years for the matching
funds needed to finance the Abilene-to-Baird water line.
Aledo Construction Co. was awarded the contract to construct
the water line from Clyde to Baird, and Bulldog Steel was the
low bidder to build the Union Hill stand pipe.

Employee suspected in Subway robbery
MERKEL - A key provided by a store employee was used in a theft
at the Subway sandwich shop early Thursday morning, police said.
Merkel patrolman Mike McLeod was told about 3:30 a.m. that
a car had dropped off a man at the business and left, said Police
Chief Bob Jones.
McLeod and a sheriff's deputy investigated the call. They took
three men in a suspicious vehicle seen near the shop to City Hall
for questioning. Jones said the men admitted to the theft of $200.
Jones said one suspect, using a key provided by a store employee,
entered the shop and used bolt cutters to open the safe.
After leaving, the thief broke a window to make it look like
someone had broken into the building, Jones said.
Formal charges will be filed with the district attorney's office,
he said.
