Coleman man killed in motorcycle accident

COLEMAN - A Coleman man was killed Friday evening in a pickup/motorcycle accident in the city.

Terry Newman, 30, was driving a motorcycle east on West 8th Street when he was struck by a pickup traveling north on Pecos.

The force of the accident threw Newman off the bike. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Coleman County Medical Center.

Christopher Scarbrough, 20, of Coleman, the driver of the pickup, was not injured, said Officer Phil Chambers.

The accident happened at West 8th and Pecos, an intersection with no light signals. Newman was wearing his helmet and neither driver was exceeding the speed limit, Chambers said.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Walker Funeral Home.

Pickup driver dumps load in accident

COLEMAN - A pickup driver pulling a travel trailer and boat trailer, ran into trouble and dumped the load on Highway 153 near Coleman on Friday afternoon.

Fortunately, there were no injuries in the accident that happened two miles west of Coleman around 4:30 p.m.

Joel Henry McMinn, of San Angelo, was traveling down a hill near the Hord's Creek Bridge when the trailer and boat trailer behind his Dodge began swaying.

McMinn lost control of the pickup, struck the bridge guard rail and overturned, leaving a mess in the middle of the highway.

He and his passengers, his 44-year-old wife, Demo, and 48-year-old Jan Markee of Midland, were not hurt. All were wearing seatbelts.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Pat Salas investigated the accident.

Accident near Blackwell sends two to hospital

BLACKWELL - An accident three miles north of Blackwell sent two Blackwell residents to Rolling Plains Hospital in Sweetwater Friday morning.

A car driven by Carrie Parsons, 20, struck the rear of a salt-water transport truck, driven by William Grigg of Bront, about 10:30 a.m., said Department of Public Safety Trooper Scott Stevenson,

"Parsons was attempting to pass when the truck made a right turn into the path of the car," Stevenson said. Parsons, who suffered head injuries, was taken to Hendrick Medical Center where she is listed in stable condition.

A passenger, Felcia Elliott, 25, had leg and foot injuries. Elliot was treated and released.

Stevenson said neither of the car's occupants were wearing seatbelts, however, air bags deployed, preventing more serious injuries.

"If it had not have been for the air bags, the two ladies would have more than likely gone through the windshield," Stevenson said.

Brownwood man seriously burned in fire

BROWNWOOD - A Brownwood man was in critical condition in Parkland Memorial Hospital Burn Center in Dallas with second-degree burns Saturday night.

Chantaboun Philavong, 73, was taken by First Flight to Parkland Saturday afternoon with burns over 65 percent of his body.

Philavong, who lives at 3904 Third Street in Brownwood, was painting the bathroom with a lacquer base paint about 1 p.m.

A flash fire was sparked when fumes came into contact with the pilot light of a gas water heater in the bathroom closet, said Brownwood Fire Capt. Larry Butler.

His wife, who was sitting in a backroom, spotted Philavong as he ran out of the bathroom with his hair on fire, Butler said.

Firefighters quickly put out the fire, and it didn't spread beyond the bathroom, he said.
