Brownwood fire victim dies
BROWNWOOD - Private funeral services have been held for a Brownwood
man who was fatally injured in flash fire at his home Saturday.
Chantaboun Philavong, 73, died Sunday in Parkland Memorial
Hospital Burn Center in Dallas, becoming Brownwood's first fire
fatality of 1997. He had been airlifted by First Flight to the
burn center with burns over 65 percent of his body.
Investigators said the flash fire was sparked when fumes from
a lacquer-base paint the victim was using to paint his bathroom
came into contact with the pilot light of a gas water heater in
the bathroom closet.
De Leon man charged in burglary
DE LEON - Pedro Valles, 39, of De Leon has been charged with
the June 15 burglary of the American Legion Hall here.
Liquor and beer valued at $90 was taken in the break-in, and
nearly $300 worth of damage was done to the door and building,
investigators said.
Merkel officials seek recycling grant
MERKEL - Recycling efforts will get a boost locally if the
city is awarded a $10,785 state grant.
Merkel aldermen approved a resolution Monday that allows officials
to apply for the money offered by the West Central Texas Council
of Governments and Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission
to purchase a multi-bin trailer.
The trailer would have containers for cardboard, aluminum,
steel and plastic.
City Manager Robert Harris said he should find out next month
if Merkel has received the grant.
In other action, the council:
-- Set a hotel/motel occupancy tax of 7 percent, with the money
going to tourism promotion. An estimated $5,000 will be generated
annually.
-- Approved a $21,800 budget for the economic development corporation.
-- Made South 5th from Trundy to the high school one way from
7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on school days only.
-- Purchased sewer cleaning equipment for $22,999 from Underground
Inc. of Pearland.
Storm in Rochester causes injury
ROCHESTER - A storm with winds estimated between 80 and 85
mph hit Rochester on Tuesday night, slightly injuring one elderly
person and knocked down power lines.
According to the Department of Public Safety, the straightline
winds swept through Rochester about 7 p.m.
One cotton warehouse was destroyed and its contents scattered
all over town. The peanut processing plant also sufferd some damage.
A portion of the Byrd Tractors roof also blew off.
Neither the condition nor the name of the injured elderly woman
was known.
