Albany lowers tax rate

ALBANY -- The Albany City Council has approved a tax rate of 56.25 cents -- down a half-cent from the current 56.76 cents.

The new rate, however, is expected to generate $191,144 in revenue -- a 3 percent increase above the current budget. That's because of the state's new homestead law providing a $15,000 exemption.

In other business, the council approved Wayne Chapman's request to buy treated water for the subdivision he is developing. Chapman agreed to be responsible for a 1,500-foot water line to connect to the city water system.

Trustees OK $31,000 computer bid

CROSS PLAINS -- The Cross Plains school approved a $31,235 computer bid Wednesday and hired a teacher.

Jim's Computer Service of Cross Plains submitted the bid for computer equipment that was unanimously accepted by trustees.

The board also hired Twyla Fetty as a fifth-grade teacher to replace Peggy Golson, who retired after 25 years.

Passenger hurt in rollover

EASTLAND -- A Dallas woman was hospitalized after a one-car rollover early Friday just east of Eastland on Interstate 20.

The victim, Kathy Yee, 18, suffered head and other injuries, according to Trooper Steve Tone of the Department of Public Safety.

Yee was taken by air ambulance to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene, where she was listed in stable condition.

Tone said Yee was riding in a westbound car driven by Juanita Botello, 79, of Dallas. Botello was taken to Eastland Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, he said.

Tone said the car overturned several times and Yee was thrown from the vehicle about 5:20 a.m. The car came to rest on its side, barely a foot from where Yee lay, according to the trooper.

Sexual assault charge filed

EASTLAND -- A Rising Star man is being held in Eastland County Jail, charged with the sexual assault of a 22-year-old woman.

The defendant was identified as Christopher Lee Barbee, 22, whose bond was set at $5,000 by Monty Jones, Rising Star justice of the peace.

Eastland County Sheriff Wayne Bradford said Barbee offered a ride to the victim Wednesday night outside the MHMR center in Brownwood. Barbee then drove the woman to a house outside Rising Star after saying he needed to check his cows before taking her home.

Bradford said the woman allegedly was assaulted with a "stun gun" several times, was handcuffed and sexually assaulted.

Barbee then reportedly returned the woman to Brownwood and released her, the sheriff said.

The woman contacted authorities before midnight. Eastland County Sheriff's Deputy Elton McCoy arrested Barbee early Thursday. Bradford said Brown County Sheriff's Deputy Mike McCoy assisted Eastland authorities.
