Woman in critical condition after wreck near Albany
ALBANY -- A Concho County woman injured in an accident Monday
south of here was listed in critical condition Friday at Hendrick
Medical Center in Abilene.
A daughter said Billie Newman, 64, of Millerview, slipped into
a coma on Wednesday and was placed in the intensive care unit.
She was undergoing treatment for six broken ribs and a punctured
lung received in the accident.
Her husband, Billy, was initially thought to be the more seriously
injured of the two and was taken to Hendrick by FirstFlight helicopter.
He was treated for head lacerations and released while his wife
was admitted in stable condition.
Investigators said Billy Newman was driving north on U.S. 283
when his vehicle collided with a westbound pickup truck driven
by Charles Wagley, 62, of Putnam. Wagley, who was not injured,
failed to yield right-of-way when he pulled onto the highway from
FM 576, DPS Trooper Xavier Perez said.
Airline to begin Brownwood service
BROWNWOOD -- Aspen Mountain Air will begin a daily round-trip
flight to Austin on Nov. 1 and may add a second flight if traffic
warrants it, according to the Brownwood Economic Development Board.
BEDC Director James Camp said the beginning fare will be $50
round trip. Each way takes about 30 minutes. The first flight
will leave Brownwood at 12:10 p.m. and the return flight will
leave Austin at 3 p.m.
Aspen is currently offering three daily flights to Dallas-Fort
Worth.
A Day Without Violence mural for Brownwood
BROWNWOOD -- Thirty Boys and Girls Club members from Brownwood,
San Angelo, and Abilene will join forces today to paint a mural
depicting what the young artists feel a day without violence would
look like.
The young artists, who have been invited by Solo Serve, a new
Brownwood department store, will begin work at the Boys and Girls
Club -- Brownwood Branch at 11 a.m. The club is located in the
gymnasium of the intermediate school at 901 Ave. B.
The youths will be assisted in their work by art students from
Howard Payne University.
The finished painting on canvas, called "A Day Without
Violence," will be unveiled at the Nov. 1 grand opening of
Solo Serve in Commerce Square Shopping Center. Following the store's
opening, the painting will be returned to the Brownwood branch
of the Boys and Girls Club permanently.
Murder trial adjourned until Tuesday
ASPERMONT -- The murder trial of a Kent County man adjourned
until Tuesday morning when testimony is expected to resume.
The trial of Frankie Dean "Buddy" Jones, 43, began
here Monday in 39th District Court.
Jones is accused of shooting his former wife, Marla Kay Jones,
39, to death on an isolated Stonewall County road July 10, 1996.
The prosecuting attorney is Stonewall County Attorney John
Fouts of Haskell. Jones is being defended by Abilene attorney
Gary Connally.
Wallace Unit assistant warden tranfers
COLORADO CITY -- Gary Mohr, assistant warden of the Wallace
Unit prison here, will transfer to the Holiday Unit in Huntsville
on Nov. 1, Warden Rodney Cooper announced.
Mohr, who has been with the Wallace Unit since February 1996,
requested the transfer in order to be closer to home to help care
for his mother. His replacement has not been named, Cooper said.
Cross Plains school board approves extracurricular status
for 4-H
CROSS PLAINS -- The Cross Plains school board accepted 4-H
as an extracurricular activity and appointed Callahan County Agent
Robert Pritz as an adjunct faculty member Tuesday.
The move will enable students with 4-H projects to be allowed
excused absences for school.
Trustees also approved payment of a $50 compliance fee concerning
an underground gasoline tank on school property. Superintendent
Jackie Tennison said the tank has not been used in three years
and must be removed by December 1998. He said he is awaiting word
from the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission on removal
procedures.
Third inmate to go on trial
COLORADO CITY -- The trial of a third Wallace Unit inmate charged
in the death of a fellow inmate will begin Monday in 32nd District
Court in Sweetwater.
Romero Perez, 22, of Odessa, is one of seven inmates charged
with the June 1995 stabbing death of Renee Guerra, 22, during
a disturbance which prison officials said grew out of a conflict
between two Hispanic gangs.
Two inmates who had been due to stand jury trial earlier this
week pleaded guilty in exchange for 25-year prison terms. They
are Frank Ramirez and Humberto Parra, both of El Paso.
District Attorney Mark Edwards said the sentences for the murder
will be "stacked" on the terms the men already face,
meaning they will have to discharge their present sentences before
beginning receiving credit on the 25-year term.
Parra was serving a five-year term for robbery and Ramirez
a 14-year term for delivery of a controlled substance, criminal
mischief and voluntary manslaughter.

Trial postponed by surgery
SNYDER -- The aggravated assault trial of a Colorado City man
was postponed for a week after the defendant underwent surgery
for appendicitis.
Derrick Dwayne Birmingham, 23, is accused of shooting a bystander
during an argument at a Snyder residence on May 31. Saundra Jackson
of Snyder was struck in the back by a bullet from a .38-caliber
pistol during an argumentbetween to other people, police said.
The trial has been reset for Monday in 132nd District Court.
If convicted Birmington could serve from two to 20 years in prison.
