Cousins to match team spirits in the big game

By JONATHAN KRYDER / Abilene Reporter-News

Cousins Jillian Gazaille and Nichole Stanley are sure to remain soul mates, despite taking opposite sides of the field tonight.

"We're just going to go out and have fun and not worry about rivalry," Nichole said.

Jillian, a sophomore Cooper Cougarette, and Nichole, a freshman Abilene High Bold Gold pep squad screamer, grew up together and share many childhood memories. Even today, after being separated in middle school, they remain close.

"They went through day care together," said Jillian's mother, Jerri Gazaille. "Both have always been athletic and creative and loved to play dress-up together."

The two even share the same birthday -- March 26 -- born just five hours apart.

"They were both in the same hospital," said grandmother Rebecca Donovan. "It was a pretty exciting time for all of us."

For the past six weeks, the two have worked hard to prepare for tonight's game -- Jillian honing her routines and Nichole practicing her cheers.

But, no matter who wins, each agrees the cross-town rivalry won't supersede their kinship.

"I'm the one that's torn," Donovan said, "because I love both of them very much and want both to be happy.

"I'm rooting for both teams."

This year, the drill team is marching during halftime with the Cooper band, and for Jillian that means a lot more exposure to the audience.

Across the field, Nichole will be leading the crowd in cheers and pompom routines with 70 of her squadmates.

The natural rivalry of the cross-town schools is heightened this year by the fact both teams are unbeaten. However, the primary goal for both girls is that peace is maintained in the family.

"It's just a game," Jillian said. Even so, when it comes down to it, "it's real important for us to win this game," they each said.
