Last day for early voting today
Today is the last day of early voting in area school board
and city council elections.
In Abilene, voters can cast ballots from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the
Taylor County Courthouse, or from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Kmart, 4220
N. 1st, or the Mall of Abilene, in front of Service Merchandise.
Through Monday, more than 1,200 Abilenians had voted early.
Last year, 1,349 people voted early in a joint city-school election.
Election day is Saturday. A list of polling places will be
in Friday and Saturday's Reporter-News.
Abilene voters this year are electing two City Council members
and considering two amendments to the city charter.
Place 1 incumbent Paul Vasquez is challenged by Billy Enriquez
and Charles Goswick.
Place 2 Councilman Don Drennan is opposed by Bobbie Hotchkiss.
Though Place 1 is a northside seat and Place 2 a southside
post, all voters voice their choice in both races.
The first proposed charter amendment would lower the age requirement
to run for and serve on the council from 21 to 18.
The second, despite a dizzying 10 pages of legal jargon, simply
rewrites parts of the charter to conform with state law that already
takes precedence. The amendment would also end a requirement that
the council terminate assistant city attorneys, currently the
only assistant directors the council fires.
