Early voting: Pace up over last two years
Early voting in the Abilene city election ended Tuesday with
1,800 ballots cast.
This year's totals easily eclipsed the pace of the last two
years. Last year's joint City Council-school board election attracted
1,349 early voters, which more than doubled the 631 citizens who
voted early in 1995.
The election is Saturday. A listing of the polls, which will
be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., will be published in Friday and
Saturday's Reporter-News.
Voters will consider returning Councilman Paul Vasquez to his
Place 1 seat for a fourth term. He is challenged by Billy Enriquez
and Charles Goswick.
The Place 2 race pits incumbent Don Drennan against Bobbie
Hotchkiss.
The ballot also includes two proposed city charter amendments.
The first would lower the minimum age for City Council service
from 21 to 18. The second would rewrite portions of the charter
to bring it into compliance with state law. It would also end
the requirement that the council approve the firing of assistant
city attorneys.
