New Year's Eve activities for youngsters
By JOHN STARBUCK Staff Writer
Youngsters who have always wanted to usher in a new year by
staying up all night will get that opportunity this New Year's
Eve.
From 7 p.m. today until 6:30 a.m. Thursday, children, ages
6 and up, can skate to their heart's content, eat free food and
play games at The Skatin Place.
"It kind of gives the parents a chance to go out on the
town and leave their kids where they will be safe," said
owner Jeff Groban. "Once we lock the doors at 12 o'clock,
the kids can't leave until their parents come and pick them up."
Three hundred children took part in 1996.
In its second year, the lock-in also will feature a live remote
by Power 103 Radio from 10 p.m. to midnight.
A regular skating session is planned from 7 to 11:30 p.m. Admission
is $15 for the all-nighter and $6 for the regular skating session.
"We do it because kids like it and they get to see their
friends," said Groban. "They bring their pillows, blankets
and sleep. Others stay up all night and skate.
"Kind of a neat thing for them to do. And it's all very
well supervised."
For the fifth year, Cats Gymnastics will sponsor a New Year's
Bash from 8 p.m. today until 8 a.m. Thursday.
The activity, geared toward ages 5 to 12, allows children to
play on the gym equipment as well as games, and eat pizza and
snacks.
At 1 a.m., youngsters ages 5-9 will be put to bed, said Cats
owner Brian Bluhm.
Cost is $19 before 8 p.m. and $22 afterwards. Space is limited
to 80 children, who need to bring a pillow and sleeping bag.
Children will also be bouncing, tumbling and swinging in the
new year at Gymnastics Sports Center from 8 p.m. today until 8
a.m. Thursday.
