Fort Worth man dies in accident

By BILLY HARRIS / Correspondent

BAIRD -- A Fort Worth man was fatally injured in a one-car accident early Saturday morning east of Baird.

Daniel G. Gutierrez, 30, was thrown from his 1990 Toyota Celica, which then landed on him in the center median of I-20 at the FM 2228 overpass.

Callahan County Sheriff Deputy Greg Wilkinson said the small car "flipped several times" after striking the guardrail leading to the overpass.

Gutierrez was traveling west when the accident occurred. The vehicle landed right side up about 260 feet from where it struck the railing. The victim was not wearing a seatbelt.

Baird Fire Department used hydraulic equipment to lift the car off the victim. He was pronounced dead at 7:28 a.m. by Justice of the Peace Don Burns.

DPS Trooper Jim Cook said the accident probably happened three to four hours before it was discovered.

An emergency responder said the car battery was thrown from the vehicle during the accident, leaving no lights to attract attention. The small car was also a dark color and hidden by guardrails.

Callahan County dispatch received notification of the accident just after 7 a.m.
