New Food Bank director named
By JOHN STARBUCK Staff Writer
A former Central Texas school teacher who grew up in a civic-minded
family is the new executive director of the Food Bank of Abilene.
Nancy Gibson, 39, taught school in Groesbeck for eight years.
She was executive director of a domestic violence shelter and
a foster parent organization in Butte, Mont., before returning
to Texas last spring.
She said she is eager to accept the challenge of guiding the
Food Bank, which serves 175 agencies in 13 counties, into the
next century.
"I came from a family that reached out their hands to
help many, many people," said Gibson. "Anywhere there's
a place that you can help, you jump in and help."
Although she was raised in Waco, Gibson graduated from high
school in Casper, Wyo. She earned her bachelor's degree from Baylor
University in 1981 and master's degree from Sam Houston State
University in 1987.
Her goals include making sure that the food bank is reaching
all the people it needs to reach, that the people who need it
know how to contact it and that the people who are hungry in the
Big Country are connected with the agencies served by the bank.
Gibson replaces Doug Eichorst, who is retiring after 5-1/2
years at the helm. He plans to spend time fishing, hunting, bicycling,
swimming and visiting his grandchildren.
He credits increased food distribution during his tenure to
work by the Key City.
"It's not a whole lot of what I did but it's more what
the community did as far as supporting the Food Bank, the donors,
board members," Eichorst said.
Gibson and her husband, Neil, have three children: Chris, 12;
Joseph, 10; and Rebekah, 6.
