HSU director, professor leaving

By BRIAN BETHEL Staff Writer

Hardin-Simmons University's Russell G. Warren is trading Texas hospitality for Southern charm.

Warren, director of the Center for Research on Teaching and Learning and distinguished professor of economics and management at HSU, is going to Macon, Ga., to be executive vice president and provost at Mercer University.

He came to Hardin-Simmons after working from 1990-95 as president and professor of economics at Truman State University, formerly Northeast Missouri State University.

Now, Warren said he's ready to try his hand at administration again - much to even his surprise.

"When I came to Abilene, I was convinced I was here to stay," he said. "But then, this opportunity came up and I decided to take it. I love this place, but I'm also really excited about this opportunity."

The position will place Warren second in command at the Georgia school, taking over operations for the university's president if he is absent. He will be senior officer for the college's educational operations.

The deans of each of the school's eight colleges will report to Warren.

"Dr. Warren brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience as well as educational insight into this key post," said Mercer University President Kirby Godsey. "(His) outstanding career reflects his commitment to higher education as he has facilitated and implemented significant programs ..."

Warren said Mercer was a "world-class" university, saying he was impressed with the quality of the teaching at the school.

Warren is known for his support of "active learning" techniques, which emphasize critical thinking over rote memorization.

In 1996, he published a book, <I>Carpe Diem,<B> on the topic while working closely with Dr. Lynn Gillette, dean of HSU's school of business, to implement the teaching style here.
