Seventh Annual event gets under way

The Seventh Annual Abilene Western began at 8 a.m. Monday with the First-Go of the Open Classic and the Non-Pro Derby. Some 56 entries in the Open Classic competed for a chance to place in the first go-round. John Wold and Greg Welch took the honors with a tie score of 222.0 pts. each in the first go-round to split first and second place. Wold was riding Play My Dream and Welch was mounted on Chexy Pep N Remedy.

In the First-Go of the Non-Pro Derby a total of 27 entries competed with Smart Little Jerry, taking the first place with Phil Rapp aboard. Second place was snatched up by Shelia Welch riding Barbs King Colonel.

The second-go of both the Open Classic and the Non-Pro Derby will be Wednesday, October 1st. You can bet you will see these top competitors riding for excellence and putting every inch of horse flesh forward to being the best to make it to the Finals on Friday, October 3rd.

Today beginning at 8 a.m. both the Open Derby and the Non-Pro Classic will compete in the first-gos. The Open Derby has a total of 43 entries and the Non-Pro Classic will have 34 competing.
