Cowboys sweep tripleheader from Austin College
SHERMAN - Hardin-Simmons University swept all three games Monday
from Austin College, 14-2, 12-1 and 11-1, in an American Southwest
Conference baseball tripleheader.
The Cowboys, who have won five in a row and 11 of their last
13, moved into second place in the ASC standings entering this
weekend's season-ending ASC tournament.
Howard Payne leads the conference standings at 12-3. HSU is
10-5 and McMurry is in third place at 9-6. The six ASC teams will
play a round-robin tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday at
HSU's Hunter Field and McMurry's Walt Driggers Field. The five
games each team will play in the tournament will count in the
final league standings.
Hardin-Simmons received complete-game pitching performances
in each game Monday from Chase Koester (4-3), Jeremy Meredith
(3-2) and James Mansinger (2-0).
Freshman Clay Johnston from Midland went 8 for 9 for HSU in
the three games, hitting two home runs, two triples, two doubles
and two singles. The Cowboys (25-17 overall) hit nine home runs
in the three games.
In the second game, Jody Turner, in only third at-bat of the
season, hit a grand slam for Hardin-Simmons, which has now won
