AHS wins in first round; CHS loses

Jeff Evans was hoping his team would begin to jell at this weekend's Key City Basketball Classic.

If averaging 111 points in two games meets Evans' criteria, then the Eagles have arrived.

Abilene High opened the tournament with a 109-69 win over Lubbock Trinity Christian in a game it was expected to win. However, they upstaged that peformance with a more impressive 113-84 quarterfinal win over Lubbock High that sends the Eagles into today's semifinals against Humble Kingwood.

Head coach Jeff Evans' Eagles erupted for 30 first-quarter points and continued a torrid shooting pace for the final 24 minutes to take the victory.

"We did a good job of playing pressure defense and we shot the ball extremely well," Evans understated. "Our big guys, especially Odis Dalton, did a good job of getting the outlet pass out quick.

"If we could depend on scoring like this every night, that would be nice. It was a credit to Lubbock High to hang in there like they did. They like this same style, and 15 points wasn't a safe lead in the third quarter. They scored quite a few points themselves."

Cooper wasn't quite as fortunate as Abilene High.

The Cougars opened with a 70-63 win over Fossil Ridge, but lost a 47-34 semifinal decision to Tyler John Tyler.

Today, Cooper will play a noon game against Lubbock Coronado at Abilene High. Coronado came out on the short end of a 72-42 decision against Spring Westfield which meets Tyler in today's other semifinal.

The Abilene High-Kingwood game will be played at 1:45 p.m. today at Cooper.

'Kingwood is big, strong and smart," Evans said. "They're also talented enough to run the transition game. We can't just rely on reckless abandon and the kind of shooting we had tonight if we're going to hang with them. But it will probably be a battle of styles out there."
