Lady Indians lose to Schreiner, 78-70

Schreiner College scored the final eight points of the game Monday afternoon, lifting the Lady Mountaineers to a 78-70 women's basketball victory over McMurry.

Schreiner, after taking a 42-36 halftime lead, opened the game up with a 20-2 run early in the second half. The run was capped when Sharon Slubar connected on a pair of free throws to give Schreiner a 62-46 lead.

"It was a very rough, physical game," said McMurry head coach Sam Nichols. "The game helped us get back into the swing of things following the holidays. It was very obvious, however, that we took two weeks off."

The Lady Indians, though, responded with a 22-5 run which was completed when Ogonna Meritt hit two free throws to tie the game at 70 with 2:32 to play.

The Lady Mountaineers, however, connected on five of eight free throws late in the game to seal the victory.

"I thought we played very well in spurts," said Nichols. "We had plenty of chances to win. We had some decent shots late in the game - we just didn't knock them down.

"After we tied the game at 70 and then missed a few shots, we seemed to get into panic mode - We then took a few more chances than usual. Overall, though, as inconsistently as we played, we still had chance to win the game."
