Prairie Dogs lose to Rio Grande Valley, 10-5

HARLINGEN - Texas-Louisiana League leader Rio Grande Valley jumped all over the Abilene Prairie Dogs early, scoring the first 10 runs of the game Sunday and then survived a ninth inning rally to beat the Dogs, 10-5.

Mark Hampton (6-4) took the loss for the Abilene, walking eight batters and allowing five hits in just 41/3 innings.

Rio Grande Valley, 14-4, had 14 hits while building their lead in the T-LL standings to 21/2 games over the second-place Alexandria.

Scott Marquardt (5-3) got the win for the WhiteWings, limiting the Prairie Dogs to three hits in seven innings while striking out a season-high eight batters.

Bryan Warner had three RBI, scored twice and hit his 19th home run among three hits to lead the WhiteWings. Matt Hobbie added a two-run homer, scored twice, and drew two walks and Pat Koerner also hit a home run in a 2 for 4 effort.

Abilene, which dropped to 6-13 in the second half, got a pair of walks and a single to load the bases before Vallarrelli had a two-run single, Jason Keith added an RBI single and Darryl Monroe hit a two-run double to cut the final margin to 10-5.

The Prairie Dogs are off today, and return home to Crutcher Scott Field for a six-game homestand beginning Tuesday night. The Dogs will host three-game sets with Tyler and Amarillo in before returning to the road.
