Players of the Week: Steer rusher gets honors

Here are the area high school football players of the week as selected by the Reporter-News:

-- Offensive player of the week: Big Spring running back Antwoyne Edwards rushed for 258 yards, averaging 9.6 yards per carry. He scored three touchdowns (7, 74, 31 yards) in a 28-20 win over San Angelo Lake View, helping keep the Steers tied for the District 4-4A lead.

-- Honorable mention: Goldthwaite running back Bobby Deeds rushed 13 times for 170 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-0 win over Early. Throckmorton back Josh Dormier carried 15 times for 237 yards and three touchdowns in a 56-13 win over Saint Jo. Dublin receiver J.R. Sharpe caught 10 passes for 164 yards and a score in a 28-12 loss to Hico. Stephenville quarterback Kelan Luker completed 14 of 22 passes for 263 yards and one touchdown in a 28-7 win over Weatherford. Munday back Jonathan Reagins rushed for 224 yards on eight attempts and scored five touchdowns in a 62-0 win over Knox City. He also caught a TD pass. Haskell back Turner Frierson carried 26 times for 156 yards and three touchdowns in a 43-0 win over Electra. Gorman quarterback Cody Foster threw three TD passes to Robert Seaton in a 35-34 win over Santa Anna. J.T. Jeffrey rushed for 142 yards on 18 attempts and had three touchdowns in Hamlin's 28-14 victory over Jim Ned. Quarterback Jim Scott scored three touchdowns, while Shannon Campbell rushed 20 times for 154 yards and a pair of scores in a 40-19 win over Rising Star. Winters quarterback Kenny Whittenburg threw three touchdown passes in a 41-26 win over Forsan.

-- Defensive player of the week: Eastland cornerback Justin Justice, a freshman, intercepted three passes, two leading to touchdowns in a 38-12 win over Coleman. He also had three tackles, assisted on two others and broke up another pass.

-- Honorable mention: Breckenridge back Brian Cyprian had eight tackles, assisted on five others, knocked down a pass and intercepted two passes, both leading to scores in a 43-13 win over Ballinger. Randall McGinn was in on 14 tackles, while Kobey Morris was in on 13 tackles and had a sack in a loss to Baird.

-- Six-Man player of the week: May quarterback Brandon Purcells passed for 357 yards and seven touchdowns in a 80-72 victory over previously undefeated and No. 1 ranked Panther Creek.

-- Honorable mention: Westbrook back Vincent Soliz passed for 280 yards and eight touchdowns, hitting David Daniel seven times for 162 yards and three scores in a 72-26 win over Loraine. Moran back Michael Stewart completed 11 of 21 passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 27 times for 216 yards and three scores in a 48-44 win over Paint Creek. C.R. Byrd completed 9 of 10 passes for 237 yards and five touchdowns in Rochester's 70-20 win over Benjamin. Abilene Christian High School quarterback Lee Headstream threw for five touchdowns, ran for another and kicked five extra points in a 66-16 win over Harvest Christian.
