ARN players of the week named

Lara Woods of Albany and Craig Steele of Sidney are the Abilene Reporter-News area basketball players of the week.

Woods, a 5-7 senior, totaled 60 points in two District 7-2A games during the past week for the Lady Lions.

Friday, in a 63-30 win over Anson, Woods scored 23 points on 69 percent shooting (9 of 13 from the field). She was 5 of 5 at the free throw line, had 11 assists, three steals and five rebounds.

In Tuesday's 69-62 loss to unbeaten and seventh-ranked Hawley, Woods scored 37 points and had eight rebounds, four steals and five assists. She made 14 of 27 from the floor (52 percent), including 3 of 5 from 3-point range.

Steele, a 6-2 senior averaging 28.6 points, 9.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game this season, poured in 65 points as Sidney clinched the District 53-A championship with a pair of victories.

In an 81-63 win over runner-up Priddy on Friday, Steele scored 25 points on 57 percent shooting (8 of 14). He also made 9 of 11 free throws, dished out 12 assists and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Tuesday, in a 107-46 win over Rising Star, Steele scored 40 points while shooting 69 percent (9 of 13) from the field, including 5 of 5 from 3-point range. He made 7 of 9 free throws, and also notched 13 rebounds and six assists.

The other girls considered this week included Blackwell's Jay Shafer, Kristi Downing of Jayton, Sweetwater's Vanessa Lehrmann, Afton Stowers of Westbrook, Gorman's Marlena Guthery, Ricka McKee of Coleman, Gustine's Leann Jones, Terri Robinson of Ira, and Stamford's Crystal Ivy.

The boys included Graham's Kolin Weaver and Brent Gaylor, Chancellor Fletcher of Cisco, Throckmorton's Slade Bigham, Rory Peacock of Woodson, Lipan's Clint Ledbetter and Jarod Westmoreland, Josh Gleaton of Early, Westbrook's Justin Hill, Joseph Turner of Cross Plains, Haskell's Carl Riley and Cliff Watkins of Breckenridge.
