Local teams have opportunity to tune up for regular season
By TED DUNNAM / Abilene Reporter-News
Abilene High and Cooper attempt to fine-tune their boys basketball teams when they compete in the five-team Key City Shootout today and Saturday.
Because Odessa High was a last-minute dropout in the tournament, Cooper will have two teams entered in the event. Three games will be played today at Cooper while Saturday's three games will be held at Abilene High.
In addition to Cooper and Abilene High, teams entered include Denton High, Denton Ryan and Killeen High.
Abilene High head coach Jeff Evans said his team should benefit from the shootout.
"Denton Ryan is off to a really good start this year. They're one of the tougher teams in the Metroplex," Evans said. "They're extremely athletic, strong and they go to the boards hard. They'll be really similar to teams like Westfield or Tyler John Tyler.
"Killeen has been ranked as high as No. 4 in the state, depending on which poll you look at. They're 13-1 and they've got a tremendous amount of athleticisim and quickness. They like to play a 94-foot game. They'll full-court press and should be fun to watch."
Win or lose, Evans expects to learn more about his team this weekend.
"We'll play two really tough opponents, certainly comparable to anybody we'll see from here on out," he said. "They should expose our weaknesses, and give us a good indicator of what we need to do better."
