Jan. 30 - ACU Football Team Getting Former TCU Players

Jan. 30 - Unger to Coach at ACU: Mike Unger is returning "home" - again.
....He played football and baseball at Abilene Christian University and he's returning next week as the Wildcats' offensive coordinator.
....He was all-state football player at Hazelwood High School in Florissant, Mo., near St. Louis and was a state champion in wrestling. He later coached at Hazelwood Central High School from 1981 to 1983 where his football and baseball teams were state runner-ups one year.
....He replaces Bob Shipley, who resigned.
....Unger started his coaching career in 1973 at Winters. He was a graduate assistant at Baylor University for two years, including 1980 when the Bears won the Southwest Conference title but lost to Alabama in the Cotton Bowl.

Jan. 30 - Hawk Named to National Team: Clyde's Brandon Hawk is one of 12 junior tennis players named to the 1997 United States National team, according to Ron Woods, the United States Tennis Association director of player development.
....Hawk recently reached the quarterfinals of doubles in the 1997 Australian Open junior championships. He also reached the fourth round of singles at the 1996 USTA National Boys 18 championships.
....Hawk, a junior at Clyde, also reached the semifinals of the 1996 Easter Bowl boys 18 championships, losing to Bob Bryan.

Jan. 29 - Pouting Gatling suspended for one game: Chris Gatling, the Dallas Mavericks' leading scorer and rebounder, was suspended from Tuesday night's game against the Los Angeles Lakers for leaving a team practice.
....Gatling, a leading contender for the NBA's Sixth Man Award, left practice before it began Monday, then was called by management and told not to show up for work Tuesday. He was expected back at practice Wednesday.
....The team did not say whether the suspension was without pay.

Jan. 29 - Barkley, Drexler out with injuries: A good-news day turned sour for the Houston Rockets Tuesday when they learned injuries will sideline Charles Barkley for 10 days and Clyde Drexler for two games.
.....Drexler became the third Rocket named the Western Conference All-Star team Tuesday, joining starters Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon. No other team has more than two players.
....But their health may determine if Barkley and Drexler play in the Feb. 9 All-Star game in Cleveland.
....Drexler suffered a right hamstring injury in Saturday night's 105-100 loss to Utah and Barkley reinjured a right ankle sprain in the same game. Barkley first hurt the ankle Jan. 16.

Jan. 29 - HSU lands Brownwood back: Audey Mitchell, a key cog in Brownwood's District 5-4A championship run, has committed to play football for Hardin-Simmons University next year.
....Mitchell, a 5-10, 195-pound running back, rushed for 1,557 yards and 23 touchdowns this past year when Brownwood went 10-2 after going 1-8-1 the year before.
....He was injured and played sparingly in the two playoff games. He was also a top kick returner and was the team punter. He rushed for 600 yards as a sophomore and 920 yards as a junior.
....He was all-district and was on all-area teams picked by the Abilene Reporter-News, Arlington Star-Telegram and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. He was also second team all-state.

Jan. 28 - Lady Wildcats move up to third: Abilene Christian University has moved up one spot to third in this week's Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll for NCAA Division II women's basketball.
....The Lady Wildcats improved their record to 18-1 with victories last week over Central Oklahoma and Midwestern State. ACU, which is leading the Lone Star Conference with an 11-0 mark, was ranked fourth in the nation last week.
....ACU, which is 49-3 since the beginning of last season and has a 32-game winning streak on its home court in Moody Coliseum, will play two LSC road games this week - Thursday at Texas A&M-Commerce and Saturday at Tarleton State in Stephenville.

Jan. 28 - Lee's Alexander commits to Tech: Midland Lee defensive back Antwan Alexander, considered one of the top defensive backs in the state, committed Sunday to Texas Tech.
....Alexander, a two-time all-District 4-5A player in 1995 and 1996, chose Tech over Texas, Miami and Texas A&M.
....Alexander, a 6-0, 175-pound cornerback, led 4-5A this past season with six interceptions. He and safety John Norman teamed up to form one of the state's most formidable secondaries.
....Norman is still considering Tech, along with Texas, Miami and A&M. Recruiting observers have considered it imperative that Tech nab both Alexander and Norman to be able to compete in the Big 12.
....Also, Snyder defensive lineman Chris Post announced he has committed to SMU. National signing day is Feb. 5.

Jan. 28 - Coaches to meet Saturday in Abilene: The Texas High School Coaches Association Region II meeting will be held Saturday at Madison Middle School, but coaches need to get here early this year.
....Registration will be held from 8-9 a.m. at which time coaches also nominate players for this summer's all-star football and basketball games in Fort Worth. And, they'll also vote on the coaches for the game. In the past, the voting was done in the afternoon business meeting.
....At 9:15 a.m., Jerry Taylor of Stamford will lecture on football and Mark Coffman of Haskell on basketball. Each sport will have an advisory meeting at 10:15 a.m.
....Tom Ritchey of Sweetwater will lecture on football at 10:30 a.m., as will Jim Reese of Abilene High on baseball and Dewain Finley of Anson on track.
....Lunch starts at 11:45 a.m. and a business meeting is set for 1 p.m.

Jan. 28 - McMurry's Brown earns ASC honor: McMurry University guard Chris Brown has been named the American Southwest Conference men's basketball player of the week.
....Brown, a 5-11 senior from Austin, helped the Indians win one of two games last week. He scored 21 points with four assists against Austin College, then scored 20 points with eight assists and five rebounds in a win against the University of Dallas.
....The ASC women's basketball players of the week were post Lori Myers of University of the Ozarks and Austin College guard Marisa Hesse.


Jan. 27 - SMU, TCU Women Break Records in Marathon Game

Jan. 27 - UT Beats Missouri: Reggie Freeman scored 17 points and Al Coleman added 16 as No. 23 Texas beat Missouri 78-74 Sunday.
....Texas (11-5, 5-1 Big 12) watched a 15-point lead disappear in the second half but relied on its pressure man-to-man defense and foul shooting to break a four-game winning streak by Missouri (10-9, 2-5) over the Longhorns.
....The Tigers outshot Texas 54 percent to 44 percent from the field and were led by Corey Tate with a career-high 22 points. But the Longhorns' swarming full-court pressure forced 26 turnovers by Missouri - 17 in the first half - and helped Texas overcome its poor shooting.

Jan. 27 - AHS Powerlifters Finish Second: The Abilene High school powerlifters competed in two meets this past weekend, finishing second in the Sweetwater meet.
....In the Sweetwater meet, Bryan Redmon, Adam Richardson and Eric Stigmoller all won their classes. In addition, Adrian Barnes and Jeremy Black brought home second-place finishes.

Jan. 26 - ACU Track Stars Make Good Showing: Luke Hurst from Wylie and Quincy Crawford of Cisco were among the first-place winners from the Abilene Christian University track team Saturday in the Red Raider Indoor Invitational hosted by Texas Tech.
....The Wildcats won first place in the men's 4x400 relay with a time of 3:17.16, and ACU also won the women's 4-400 in a time of 3:53.89.
.....Ann Rhiddlehoover, a Texas Tech freshman out of Cooper, was eighth in the women's weight throw with a distance of 36 feet, 43/4 inches. Rhiddlehoover's school record in the event (38-5Jan. 2) was broken by teammate Alexia Jones with a heave of 41 feet, 5Jan. 4 inches, which was good for fifth place.

Jan. 25 - NCAA Considering Facility in Metroplex Area: The NCAA's hunt for a new home wrapped up two days in the Dallas-Fort Worth area Friday with officials talking about building its headquarters near the nation's second-busiest airport.
....Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport officials, working with the chambers of commerce for both cities, have offered the NCAA three undeveloped land plots. Each would be a campus-like environment featuring office space, meeting facilities and the Hall of Champions.
...."We wanted the communities to be somewhat creative in their proposals, and the concept of putting them all together and having a campus environment certainly does that," NCAA executive director Cedric Dempsey said.
....Dempsey and other NCAA officials toured the region for two days. They were in Denver earlier in the week and will visit Kansas City and Indianapolis next week. A decision is expected this spring.

Jan. 25 - Reynolds Signs with Astros: Pitcher Shane Reynolds, one of four Houston Astros players who were eligible for salary arbitration, agreed today to a an $8.5 million, three-year contract.
....Reynolds, who had a 16-10 record last year with 204 strikeouts, can earn performance bonuses that would raise the contract to $10.1 million if he pitches 34 games and 235 innings per season and.
....Reynolds, who earned $330,000 last season, had asked for $2.7 million in arbitration. The Astros had offered $1.7 million.

Jan. 24 - Texas Tech Basketball Team Facing "Murderer's Row"

Jan. 24 - Wylie's Dixon commits to HSU: Linebacker David Dixon of Wylie High School has committed to play football at Hardin-Simmons University.
....Dixon, a 6-2, 200-pound senior, earned two varsity letters at Wylie and was a second-team all-district selection for the Bulldogs at linebacker.
....In 1996, Wylie went 10-0 during the regular season and won the District 6-3A championship. Dixon is also a member of the Bulldogs' basketball team this season.
....Dixon will join a Cowboys team that finished 8-3 in 1996 and was American Southwest Conference co-champion. The Cowboys advanced to the NAIA Division II playoffs for the fifth consecutive year.

Jan. 24 - Williams Heading to ACU: John Williams, District 4-5A's all-time leading rusher, has decided to transfer to Abilene Christian University and play football for the Wildcats.
....Williams, a 1994 graduate of Odessa Permian, left Texas Christian University last week and has apparently made up his mind that he will use his final three years of eligibility at ACU. He informed the ACU coaches of his decision earlier this week, and told the Odessa American in Thursday's editions that his "making the move to ACU will be a whole lot better deal."
....Williams rushed for 359 yards and four touchdowns last season for the Horned Frogs, who were competing in their first season in the Western Athletic Conference. His rushing total included two 100-yard games, the first time a TCU freshman had turned that trick since 1989.

Jan. 24 - SMU Kicker Booted over Soccer: Southern Methodist kicker Daniel Hernandez has been given the boot by new football coach Mike Cavan.
....Hernandez has decided to give up the sport after being told by Cavan that he can no longer play both football and soccer. Ironically, previous football coach Tom Rossley recruited Hernandez off the soccer team.
...."It's kind of upsetting that he's not even giving me a chance, and respecting what I've gone through, I just don't think that is right," Hernandez told the Tyler Morning Telegraph in Thursday's editions.
....SMU's sport information department released a statement from Cavan saying: "I was concerned that due to his commitment to the SMU men's soccer team, he would not be able to continue to balance two demanding sports. ... After our discussion, I decided that it would be best for Daniel to concentrate on soccer next season."
....Hernandez began his college soccer career in 1994 at Creighton, starting 19 games as a freshman. He transferred to SMU the next year and started 17 games.
....That was when Rossley lured him to football with a full scholarship - and the opportunity to play both sports, Hernandez said.
....Last fall, he made 25-of-28 extra points and 15-of-21 field goals. He made four field goals in a season-ending 27-24 victory over Texas Christian, including a season-long 45-yarder.
....In the past soccer season, Hernandez had 24 points on eight assists and eight goals, four of them game-winners.

Jan. 24 - Ward Signs with Rangers: Relief pitcher Duane Ward on Thursday signed a minor-league contract with the Texas Rangers and will attend major-league spring training, taking another step in his long comeback from arm surgery.
....Ward has appeared in only four major-league games since tearing his right rotator cuff prior to the 1994 season. In 1993, he led the American League with 45 saves while pitching for the world champion Toronto Blue Jays.
....Ward pitched recovered from surgery to pitch in just three games in 1994 for minor league Dunedin. In 1995, he gave up 11 runs in 2 2/3 innings over four games for Toronto before being put on the disabled list again. He threw 12 more games in the minors, then became a free agent after the season.


Jan. 23 - Mouton has fractured right wrist: Houston Astros outfielder James Mouton, who agreed Tuesday to a $415,000, one-year contract, fractured his right wrist while playing winter baseball in Puerto Rico.

....Mouton, who is wearing a cast, is expected to be ready when the Astros open their season April 1 against Atlanta. He played winter baseball for Santurce in Puerto Rico, where he batted .256 with 13 RBI.
....He hit .263 with three homers and 34 RBI for the Astros last year.

Jan. 23 - Swoopes assigned to Houston WNBA franchise: Olympic gold medalist Sheryl Swoopes was assigned to the Houston franchise in the Women's National Basketball Association on Wednesday although she won't play until August because of her pregnancy.
...."I'm going to work hard during the pregnancy and afterward, so that I can get back on the court as soon as possible and do what I want to do," said Swoopes, due to deliver about the time the season starts in June.
....Swoopes' pregnancy actually helped the Houston franchise because it also was assigned another top player, former Southern California guard Cynthia Cooper, currently playing professionally in Italy.
....Swoopes and Cooper were among 16 top players the league assigned to its eight franchises.
...."The league told us we would not have Cynthia Cooper's talents had it not been for Sheryl's pregnancy," said John Thomas, Rockets executive vice president. "Cynthia is one of the players at the top level of this group of 16."
....The WNBA looked at regional appeal in placing its players. Swoopes is from Brownfield and played at Texas Tech. Cooper's hometown is San Antonio.

Jan. 22 - Rangers' Spending Spree Continues

Jan. 22 - Rangers in Abilene Wednesday: Five members of the American League West division champion Texas Rangers will sign autographs tonight during an appearance at the Mall of Abilene.
....Representing the team during its annual caravan will be general manager Doug Melvin, outfielder Rusty Greer, infielder Mark McLemore, pitcher Darren Oliver and radio announcer Eric Nadel. They will be at the Mall of Abilene from 6-7:30 p.m. today.

Jan. 22 - Astro Undergoes Surgery: Third baseman Sean Berry, who underwent shoulder surgery on Oct. 10, agreed Tuesday to a $2.2 million, one-year contract with the Houston Astros.
....The Astros also agreed to one-year contracts with catcher Tony Eusebio ($650,000) and outfielder James Mouton ($415,000). Eusebio earned $300,000 last season and Mouton earned $196,000.

Jan. 22 - Permian's Williams leaves TCU: Texas Christian running back John Williams and offensive lineman Clifton Clemons, both of whom just finished their redshirt freshmen years, have decided to leave the program.
....Williams, a former Odessa Permian standout, was the team's second-leading rusher last year. Clemons started at guard and was the favorite to replace highly rated Ryan Tucker at center.
....Williams ran for 359 yards and four touchdowns this season. He had two 100-yard games, something no TCU freshman had done even once since 1989.

Jan. 21 - Rangers Find Title Going to Be Expensive

Jan. 21 - HSU, McMurry Players Honored: Five guards shared men's basketball player of the week honors in the American Southwest Conference.
....Honored were Austin College's Christian Morgia, Howard Payne's Ryan Tomlin and Tremenio Yaites, McMurry's Chris Brown and Hardin-Simmons' Bernard Combs.
....Tomlin averaged 26.5 points per game and Yaites 29 points per game for the Yellow Jackets, who split with two games with HSU and McMurry last week.
....Brown averaged 27 points and seven assists per game for the Indians, while Combs averaged 23.5 points and eight rebounds for the Cowboys.
University of Ozarks post Lori Myers is the ASC women's basketball player of the week.


Jan. 20 - Rangers, Pudge Ink Big Deal: All-Star catcher Ivan Rodriguez and the Texas Rangers reached agreement Sunday on the richest one-year contract ever in baseball, a $6.65 million deal that enabled the sides to avoid salary arbitration.

....Rodriguez, 25, is a five-time All-Star and has won five straight Gold Gloves.
....He hit .300 last season with 19 homers, 86 RBIs and 116 runs scored. His 47 doubles set a major league record for catchers.
....Rodriguez has led big league catchers for the last two years in throwing out potential basestealers. He nailed 51.1 percent of the runners last season.
....The $6.65 million contract surpassed the previous high for a one-year deal, set by Toronto's Joe Carter at $6.5 million for 1997. The highest per-year average ever is $11 million, set by Albert Belle when he signed a five-year, $55 million contract as a free agent with the Chicago White Sox.

Jan. 20 - Fasting Hakeem Beats Bulls: A depleted Hakeem Olajuwon was still enough to lead the Houston Rockets over the Chicago Bulls.
....Olajuwon, who didn't drink liquids during the game because of his religious fast, had 32 points and 16 rebounds as the Houston Rockets finished with a 19-2 run to defeat the Bulls 102-86 Sunday.
....The victory snapped Chicago's nine-game winning streak and Houston's four-game losing streak - dating to 1994 - against the Bulls.
....Olajuwon, a Muslim, is observing Ramadan, a period of fasting that includes no liquids between sunrise and sundown.

Jan. 20 - Soccer's Lady Coogs on Roll: Cooper won its first two matches before falling to Keller 3-1 in the championship game of the Arlington girls soccer tournament Saturday afternoon.
.... The Lady Cougars' only goal in the game came from Carolyn Poynor on an assist from Amanda Butz. Stacy Metcalf and Cricket Holt earned all-tournament honors from Cooper.
....In Cooper's opening match, the Lady Cougars downed Keller Sossil Ridge, 7-0. Metcalf and Rachel Welch each had two goals while Poynor Leanne Senter and Laura Berg eache scored one.
....The Lady Coogs followed that triumph with a shootout win over Southlake Carroll. Andrea Meacham scored on a corner kick for Cooper's goal in regulation while Poynor scored in the first round of the shootout before Butz scored the game-winner.
....Cooper, now 7-1, returns to action Saturday against Midland Lee.

Jan. 19 - ACU Track Teams Shine: Although it didn't compete in head-to-head competition, Abilene Christian University showed its dominance at the Texas Tech quadrangular.
....The women got victories from Monique Kuenen in the shot put; Deloren Ennis in the 55-meter hurdles; Vivian Ruisters in the 1,000 meters; and from its distance medley relay team.
....The Wildcat men claimed several wins which included victories by Glen Griffin (weight throw and shot put); Trafton Rodgers (high jump); Tye Anderson (triple jump); Jason Pearce (pole vault); Kempa Busby (400 meters); Musa Gwanzura (1,000 meters); Fallody Moonga (3,000 meters); and the distance medley relay team.
....Texas Tech, Texas-El Paso and Texas-Pan American competed in dual and triangual meets. Had point totals been kept, ACU would have easily won the meet.

Jan. 19 - AHS to host Alumni Day: The Abilene High baseball program will be hosting Alumni Day on Feb. 15 at Blackburn Field.

....Organizers are especially looking for those who played baseball for the Eagles in 1950, '52, '55, '56, '57, '70, '71 and '72. The teams from the 1950s went to the state tournament in Austin, while those in the 1970s made it to the quarterfinals.
....There will be a luncheon at 11 a.m. in the west cafeteria on the AHS campus for the players from those years.

Jan. 18 - Quail Hunt Participants Not Talking Baseball

Jan. 18 - HSU's Baumann honored: Hardin-Simmons University quarterback Todd Baumann has been named an NAIA Division II Football All-America Scholar-Athletes. He was one of 104 student-athletes named to the team.
....Baumann was the American Southwest Conference offensive player of the year for the second straight season after completing 225 of 384 attempts for 2,734 yards and 23 touchdowns. In three seasons, he passed for 5,093 yards, the third highest total in HSU football history. He tossed 49 TD passes, also the third highest total in Cowboys' history.
....The senior from Arlington had a 3.70 grade-point average as a pre-med/chemistry major. Jan. 18 - Barkley may be out week to 10 days: Charles Barkley, the NBA's third-leading rebounder, estimates he will be sidelined a week to 10 days because of an ankle injury.
....The Houston Rockets' power forward, who is averaging 14.8 rebounds and 19.8 points per game, was injured in Thursday night's victory over Sacramento.

Jan. 18 - Wrestling close to becoming UIL sport: Wrestling is a step closer to being sanctioned by the University Interscholastic League, possibly beginning with the 1998-99 school year.
....The UIL announced Friday that the sport passed a December referendum of school district superintendents. All that's left is approval by the State Board of Education, which meets next month.
....Superintendents in all five classes were polled about wrestling, with the issue needing a majority from any of the classes to move on to the State Board. It passed only in Class 5A, by a margin of 132-75.
....The entire UIL body was polled, regardless of whether they had wrestling. Currently, only 135 Texas schools have wrestling programs.

Jan. 17 - Awards Handed Out at Cooper Football Banquet: Cooper capped its most successful football season since 1967 Thursday night with the school's Football Banquet at the Abilene Civic Center.
....The Cougars finished the season 12-4 and advanced to the Class 5A Division II state championship game before falling to Austin Westlake, 55-15.
....Offensive lineman Matt Royals took home two awards, while all-state running back Dominic Rhodes earned one.
.....Royals, a first-team all-District 4-5A selection at offensive guard, was named the team's offensive lineman of the year, and he also won the Exchange Club Lineman of the Year award, given annually to the top lineman at Cooper.
....Rhodes, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards and scored 33 touchdowns on the year, was honored as the team's best running back.
....Wide receiver Miles Durham and quarterback Michael Anderson were named co-winners of the Fighting Heart Award. Anderson broke a finger on his throwing hand late last season, but came back this season to throw for more than 2,000 yards and lead the Cougars to the Class 5A Division II state title game.
....Durham separated his left shoulder in the bi-district win over Amarillo High, had surgery on it and appeared to be out for the rest of the playoffs. However, he came back to play in the state-title game loss to Austin Westlake.
....Defensive back Melvin Barnes and tackle Kevin Stevenson, both first-team all-district picks, were named the team's top defensive back and defensive lineman, respectively.
....The top specialist was Courtney Martin, who converted on 57 of 57 extra points and hit seven field goals, including a 22-yarder in overtime that gave the Cougars a 24-21 win over Richardson Lake Highlands in the state semifinals.
....The top scout team members were Robbie Johnson (offense) and Brian Baker (defense).
After the banquet, the team's highlight video was shown at the Paramount Theatre.

Jan. 17 - Twelve celebrity hunters to participate: Twelve celebrity hunters are scheduled to attend the fifth annual Justin Celebrity Quail Hunt this weekend in Sweetwater.
....The two-day hunt will be held today and Saturday at Double Heart Ranch and Red Bluff Hunting Camp. Among the 12 celebrity hunters are former major league stars Nolan Ryan, baseball's all-time strikeout lead who finished his career with the Texas Rangers; Bobby Murcher, centerfielder for the New York Yankees, and Rusty Rose, general partner for the Rangers.
....Rick Rhodes of Sweetwater, chairman of the organizing committee for the hunt, said about 30 hunters will donate $1,000 each to participate this weekend. The hunt benefits intercollegiate baseball at Abilene Christian University.
....The other nine celebrity hunters are current players Rusty Greer of the Rangers, Norm Charlton of the Seattle Mariners, Dennis Cook of the Florida Marlins, Jeff Darwin of the Chicago White Sox and Danny Darwin of the Houston Astros, and former players Claude Osteen, Jim Kern, Jerry Walker and Leon Roberts.
....Jeff Frye, an infielder for the Boston Red Sox, was previously scheduled to attend, but Rhodes said Frye was forced to cancel his visit because of schedule conflicts.

Jan. 17 - Rangers Sign Vosberg: Left-handed reliever Ed Vosberg, one of the few reliable arms in Texas' bullpen last season, avoided going to arbitration Thursday by agreeing to a one-year contract with the Rangers.
....Vosberg was 1-1 with eight saves and a 3.27 ERA in 52 appearances last season. He was second on the staff in saves and third in appearances.
....The Rangers still have three players eligible for arbitration: pitcher Roger Pavlik, third baseman Dean Palmer and catcher Ivan Rodriguez.
....Texas also signed one-year deals with infielder Mike Bell and outfielder Marc Sagmoen. Both were added to the major-league roster for the first time.

Jan. 14 - Stars Activate Marshall: The Dallas Stars activated right wing Grant Marshall from the NHL injured reserve list in time for the team's Monday night game against the Montreal Canadiens, general manager Bob Gainey said.
....Marshall, 23, suffered a concussion after being hit with an elbow by the Bruins' Troy Mallette during the Stars' Jan. 4 game in Boston. Mallette received a five-minute major and game misconduct for the incident.


Jan. 13 - Houston Wants Hockey Team: A city that rarely sees snow and has only five ice hockey rinks in its metropolitan borders is warming to a cold-weather sport.

....Chuck Watson, owner of the International Hockey League Houston Aeros, heads one of three groups that will make presentations Monday to the National Hockey League Board of Governors, seeking an NHL franchise for Houston.

Jan. 13 - New Pro Football League Being Organized: Organizers of a new professional football league say they plan to establish teams in at least 12 cities, including Dallas, by the spring of 1998, said Eddie Hueston, executive general manager of Fair Park, site of the Cotton Bowl.
....The Park and Recreation Board's Fair Park Committee will consider a proposed five-year lease agreement next week that calls for the Dallas team to play 10 home games a year in the Cotton Bowl. The City Council could be asked to approve an agreement as soon as next month, Hueston said.
....A league organizer told The Dallas Morning News on Friday that officials will unveil plans for the new league in a New York City news conference no later than early February. Jan. 11 - Jones Resigns at Ballinger: Glenn Jones resigned Thursday night as Ballinger's head football coach, but it didn't take long to name a replacement - former assistant coach Dan Slaughter.
....The school board offered the position to Slaughter at Thursday's board meeting, and the Eastland High School head coach accepted it Friday morning. He hopes to be on his new job by Feb. 1 or sooner. He has been the coach at Eastland since July after being an assistant to Jones for three years.
....Ballinger superintendent Rodney Gordon had asked for Jones' resignation following a 4-6 season. Gordon had said earlier that Jones' handling of athletes, not his record, was the reason for the requested resignation. Jones still has a year to go on his contract, but a settlement was reached that was agreeable to both sides. Jones is no longer employed by the school district and is looking for another coaching job.

Jan. 11 - ACU signs two football players: Linebacker Warring Vital and defensive back Desmond Gant of Ranger College are the first two football players to sign with Abilene Christian University for the 1997 season.
....Both earned junior college all-America and all-conference honors for Ranger last season. Both played high school football at West Orange-Stark and will attend ACU in the spring semester.
....Vital is 6-0, 205 pounds, while Gant is 6-2, 215 pounds. Both earned all-district and all-state honors in high school.

Jan. 11 - Stars Activate Hatcher: The Dallas Stars activated All-Star defenseman Derian Hatcher from the injured reserve list Friday and placed goaltender Roman Turek on the list.

Jan. 11 - UT's Boras Promoted: Rob Boras, a member of the University of Texas football staff the past three seasons, has been named an assistant coach, head coach John Mackovic announced.
....Boras fills the opening left when assistant Bobby Jack Wright replaced departed defensive coordinator Gary Darnell Tuesday. Wright had coached wide receivers and special teams, but Boras' specific coaching position has not been determined, Mackovic said.


Jan. 10 - West Texas Shootout Begins: Today's opening-round games in the annual West Texas Shootout will serve as season openers for the Abilene High girls and both the Cooper boys and girls soccer teams.

....The two-day tournament, featuring eight teams in the girls bracket and eight on the boys side, kicks off today at Lee Complex with four 3:30 p.m. games. The championship games Saturday, to be played at Hardin-Simmons University's Shelton Stadium, are scheduled for 4 p.m. for the girls and 6 p.m. for the boys.
....The season opener for the Abilene High girls Tuesday at Alvarado was postponed, and Lady Eagles' coach Renee Barbee will try to reschedule the game for next month.
....The opening game for the Cooper boys, Tuesday at Pflugerville, was canceled because of bad weather and won't be rescheduled.

Jan. 10 - ABL Looking to Expand in Texas: The American Basketball League - a women's professional basketball league set to expand next season - is eyeing Austin and San Antonio as possible sites for a team.
...."We're expanding by two more teams and are actively pursuing interested cities and Austin is one of them," said ABL co-founder and chief operating officer Steve Hams. "Austin or San Antonio and a half dozen other possibilities (outside of Texas)."
....The eight-team ABL is currently in its inaugural season. It will expand by two teams in the 1997-98 season.
....In addition to Texas, the ABL is also looking at Tennessee, Indianapolis, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York, Florida, Long Beach, Calif. and St. Louis, Hams said.

Jan. 10 - Woman Basketball Star Pregnant: Sheryl Swoopes, perhaps the biggest star of the fledgling Women's NBA, will miss most of its inaugural season for a reason that never plagued the men's league: She is pregnant.
....The 25-year-old Olympic gold medalist is due to deliver shortly before the WNBA season begins June 21, and will resume playing in August. The season ends Aug. 30.
....Swoopes said she and husband Eric Jackson, her high school sweetheart whom she married in 1995, are looking forward to their new arrival.
...."I'm very excited about it," she said Thursday from Lubbock. "People can have a lot of injuries, and this is one sort of an injury we know about ahead of time."
....But it is a setback for the WNBA, which will be competing for fans with the rival American Basketball League. The ABL began a 40-game season in October.

Jan. 7 - Texas Guard Earns Honors: A pair of 17-point performances earned Texas guard Al Coleman the honor as Big 12 Conference basketball player of the week, while top rookie honors went to Alvin Mitchell of Nebraska.
....Coleman, a 6-foot-1 senior from Houston, hit nine of his 15 3-point shots in the two games, a 74-66 loss to Providence and a 92-58 victory over Oklahoma State. He had seven rebounds and six assists in the Oklahoma State game.

Jan. 7 - Ranger Playing Canadian Team: Ranger College will play a doubleheader against Grande Prairie College from Alberta, Canada, today.

Jan. 6 - Track Games Canceled: The Gallery Furniture Games, the fledgling indoor track and field event that last year in Houston that served as an Olympic warm-up, has been canceled after officials were told the event would not be televised.
....USA Track and Field officials notified Gallery Furniture owner Jim "Mattress Mac" McIngvale Friday afternoon that his Feb. 15 track event would not be on television.
...."When they decided that they weren't going to televise it, we lost all our sponsors to put it on," McIngvale said Sunday.
....McIngvale said he didn't know why USATF decided not to televise his event, which debuted last year.

Jan. 4 - Tech's Daniels Turning Pro: The sands of time were flowing a little too fast for Tony Daniels to play his senior season at Texas Tech.
....The junior defensive end announced Friday that he's making himself available for this spring's NFL draft, becoming the second Red Raiders junior this week to jump ship.
....Star tailback Byron Hanspard said God's will inspired him to turn pro on Monday. Daniels can thank Father Time.
...."I'm 24 years old, and I didn't want to be about 30 and going in to the NFL," said Daniels, an Odessa Permian product who sat out what would have been his first season because of academic ineligibility, then missed the 1995 season with a knee injury sustained in a diving accident.


Jan. 3 - Can Texas Win the Big One? A 38-15 loss to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl brought back all kinds of nightmares for the Texas Longhorns.
....An early interception by quarterback James Brown that was converted into a Nittany Lions touchdown spurred memories of costly pickoffs in losses this year to Notre Dame and Virginia.
....A momentum-turning 81-yard kickoff return by Penn State's Kenny Watson that set up another TD flashed back to a decisive punt return for a touchdown in Texas' loss to then-winless Oklahoma.
....The second-half collapse - Penn State outscored Texas 31-3 in the final two quarters - mirrored last year's Sugar Bowl, in which the Longhorns led 10-0 before falling 28-10.
....The 20th-ranked Longhorns (8-5) arrived in Tempe nearly two weeks before the Fiesta Bowl in hopes that a strictly-business approach with two-a-day workouts would erase those past failures.

Jan. 3 - Cassell is Kidd Without Fanfare: Sam Cassell knows he's not going to make Mavericks fans forget Jason Kidd any time soon. But he does know he can make them remember the chills and thrills of playing in the playoffs.
....During his first two seasons in the NBA, Cassell played a pivotal role in the Houston Rockets' drive to consecutive league championships in 1994 and '95. He is a fierce competitor who can take over a game with nifty drives to the basket, or by burying jump shots from perimeter. He also knows how to distribute the ball.

Jan. 2 - Penn State Beats Texas: Penn State remained perfect in the Fiesta Bowl, thanks in part to a freshman kick returner with a penchant for inspirational plays.

....Kenny Watson's 81-yard return of the second-half kickoff Wednesday night sparked a rally that carried No. 7 Penn State from behind to beat Texas 38-15 and give coach Joe Paterno his sixth straight Fiesta Bowl win.
....It was the second time this season Watson opened the second half with a long kickoff to bring his team from behind. And it couldn't have come at a better moment for the Nittany Lions, who had been dominated much of the first half.

Jan. 2 - BYU Takes Cotton Win: Texas A&M fans know exactly how the thousands of Kansas State faithful feel today as they make the trek back north on Interstate 35.
....Brigham Young receiver K.O. Kealaluhi beat backup defensive back Lamar Chapman on a deep route to the corner of the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown pass with 3:39 remaining in the game Wednesday to give the fifth-ranked Cougars a come-from-behind 19-15 victory over Kansas State in the 61st Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl Classic.
.....Back on Aug. 24, Kealaluhi caught a 46-yard touchdown pass with 1:03 remaining to give Brigham Young a 41-37 victory over Texas A&M in the Pigskin Classic, a loss that sent the Aggies plummeting to a disappointing season.
....Brigham Young, on the other hand, became the first team in NCAA Division I history to win 14 games in a season. The Cougars' midseason loss to Washington was the only blemish on their remarkable 14-1 season.

Jan. 1 - Tech's Carr Honored: Texas Tech's Cory Carr received Big 12 player of the week honors for his performance in two games last weekend, a victory and loss against Wyoming.
....Carr, a 6-foot-4 junior guard from Kingsland, Ark., averaged 27 points in the two games against Wyoming. In the 122-105 loss to Wyoming, Carr scored 31 points with four rebounds. In the 77-74 victory over Wyoming, Carr scored 23 points including 10-of-11 shooting from the free throw line.
....Baylor's Leon Morris, a 6-foot-6 freshman forward from Houston, was named rookie of the week for his performance in a 65-56 victory over Northwestern State. Morris shot 50 percent from the field in 15 minutes of action for eight points.
