All-Big Country Super Team
By MARK WILSON
Staff Writer
The Comanche girls and the Sweetwater boys were on a mission
to complete a dream journey during the 1996-97 basketball season,
and Amber Ward and Derrick Franklin took over the wheel to help
drive their teams to their eventual destination - Austin.
Ward is the Abilene Reporter-News girls Player of the Year
and Franklin is the boys Player of the Year on the all-Big Country
Super Team.
The 5-8 Ward, named Friday as the all-Big Country Class 3A
girls Player of the Year, averaged 16.3 points, 6.1 rebounds and
4.2 steals. The Maidens finished their season at 28-6 with a loss
to Dripping Springs in the state semifinals. She was also a TABC
first-team all-state selection.
"She had a good supporting staff, and she always let them
know she wasn't the only one on the floor," Comanche coach
Becky Raesz said. "She's a great ball handler, and she penetrated
really well. That's where she got most of her points."
Franklin, a 6-3, 200-pound junior, was as reliable as he was
difficult to stop when he got his hands on the ball, sinking 76
percent of his field goal attempts overall. The District 4-4A
MVP and TABC Class 4A second-team all-state selection averaged
16 points and 13 rebounds a game.
"I think if he grows an inch or two, he will be one of
the top 50 players in the state," Sweetwater coach Kenny
Chandler said. "He has a great attitude. He has received
a lot of attention, and he has handled it well.
"He's not going to live on past performance. He'll be
the first one to be dressed for practice. He leads by example."
The Super Team boys list also includes Robert Reed and Jason
Blueford of Sweetwater, Kolin Weaver of Graham, Bryan Herring
of Breckenridge, Zack Brown and Dwayne Dacus of Jim Ned, Coffey
Anderson of Bangs, Casey Burgess of Haskell, Shea Feagan of Roby,
and Bryan Branham of Moran.

year in a row, averaged 19 points and 13 rebounds a game as Hawley
got off to a 32-0 start. She was a TABC first-team Class 2A all-region
