AHS diver makes it back to state

LUBBOCK - Abilene High diver Chantell Riggs is headed back to state.

Riggs successfully defended her title Friday in the girls 1-meter diving at the Region I Swimming and Diving Championships at the Texas Tech Aquatic Center. She posted a winning total of 363.15, easily outdistancing runner-up Nikah Sherman of Amarillo High (303.15).

Riggs, who is the only local qualifier for the state meet, finished 12th at state last year.

In Saturday's finals, the best finish by a Big Country swimmer was fourth by Big Spring's Michelle Tuttle in the girls 100 breaststroke (1:12.23).

Dustin Sanderson of Abilene High was fifth in the boys 1-meter diving with 242.30 points.

The rest of the area swimmers to score points all finished in sixth place. The Abilene High girls had a 1:50.50 time in the 200 freestyle relay; Big Spring's Somer Leubner timed in 2:22.32 in the 200 individual medley; AHS' Marilyn Nguyen finished with a 1:07.65 time in the 100 backstroke; and the Eagles tied for sixth in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:34.67.
