Football championships won't be at single site

AUSTIN - Once again, the University Interscholastic League's Legislative Council has shot down a proposal that would have all of the football championship games played at a single site.

Superintendents voted 508-293 in September against establishing a common site for the game. Fox Sports Southwest, which offered money, hotel rooms and other incentives to participating schools, had made the proposal.

The Legislative Council did pass a proposal that would allow two classifications in both boys and girls soccer. So, beginning in the 1998-99 school year, Class 5A and 4A will crown state champions. In the past, they were in one classification.

Two items will be placed on a ballot for superintendents to vote on in early December. One would advance three teams from each district in Class 3A and 2A into the playoffs in all team sports. The other would create a Class 4A regional tournament in boys and girls basketball. They currently play single games in the regional semifinals and finals, while the other classifications hold regional tournaments to qualify teams for the state tournament.

Among the proposals rejected by the Council were adding gymnastics and rodeo as UIL activities, allowing private and parochial schools to join the UIL and allowing home school students to participate in UIL activities.
