Cooper moves into second

Cooper moved into sole possession of second place in the District 4-5A volleyball standings with 15-6, 15-5 win Saturday over Midland High at Cougar Gym.

The victory improved Cooper's record to 3-1 in district and 15-9 overall.

"Everyone did well," Cooper coach Beth Wills said. "All 13 players and everyone did well on the court. It was nice to finally win a match in two."

Wills said Stacy McNeil and Melisse Watkins both played well in the back row defensively. Cricket Holt served 11 points, including four aces, for Cooper.

Midland Lee def. AHS

MIDLAND -- The Midland Lee Lady Rebels downed the Abilene High Lady Eagles, 15-6, 15-9, Saturday in a District 4-5A volleyball match.

The Lady Eagles made 54 unforced errors and missed nine serves in falling to 1-4 in district play and 8-13 overall.

"From the start, we just shot ourselves in the feet with unforced errors," said AHS coach Didi Pierce.

McMurry takes 2nd; HSU wins consolation

ODESSA -- Concordia Lutheran edged McMurry, 11-15, 16-14, 7-15, 16-14, 15-13, Saturday in the championship match of the UT-Permian Basin volleyball tournament.

McMurry won twice Saturday to advance to the title match, beating Sul Ross, 15-1, 15-12, 15-6, and UT-Permian Basin, 15-12, 15-12, 15-11.

Hardin-Simmons won the consolation title in the tourney by winning two of three matches Saturday. UT-Permian Basin beat HSU, 15-10, 15-12, 13-15, 8-15, 15-6. But the Cowgirls came back to beat Sul Ross, 15-5, 15-8, 2-15, 15-13 and LeTourneau, 15-4, 9-15, 15-11, 15-4.

Sabrina Griffin of McMurry and Melanie Standridge of Hardin-Simmons were named to the all-tournament team.

Coach Gina Markin also said Jill Gibson, on offense, and Sarah Loving, on defense, played well for the Cowgirls.
