Bulldogs lose to Lanier in tourney's second round

KERRVILLE - The Wylie boys basketball team fell behind early and couldn't quite recover in an 87-64 loss to Class 4A San Antonio Lanier Tuesday in the second round of the Kerrville Tournament.

The Bulldogs (12-5), who had beaten Floresville in the opening round on Monday, will take on Class 5A Copperas Cove in the third-place game today at 1:30 p.m.

Lanier took a 19-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Wylie got back within striking distance by outscoring Lanier 20-10 in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 53-47. But Lanier came on strong with a 34-point fourth quarter to put the Bulldogs away.

Grant Gregg paced Wylie with 18 points and eight rebounds, and teammate Ricky Beard added 13.

"We just dug ourselves really a deep hole in the first quarter," Wylie head coach Kirby Chandler said. "They came out ready to play and out-hustled us, and we were very tentative. They were exceptionally quick and agressive. It was a pretty loosely called game, and they did a better job of adjusting to the officiating. We didn't make the most of our possessions. We turned the ball over way too many times today.

"I was real pleased we cut it to six at the end of third quarter, and we really fought our way back into it. It took a great deal of effort. They hit a couple of really big shots that gave them some good momentum in the fourth quarter, and they really built on that."
