Tiger, United States win, South Africa and Zimbabwe are upset

By ROBERT MILLWARD AP Sports Writer

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) - Backing up their top seeding, Tiger Woods, John Daly and Mark O'Meara cruised to 3-0 sweep against Japan at the Dunhill Cup on Friday.

Meanwhile, Ernie Els and defending titlist South Africa were upset by Germany and Nick Price's Zimbabwe tumbled to France.

Defying the howling gales and heavy rain sweeping across St. Andrews in the early part of his round, Woods carded a 2-under 70 to beat Katsumasa Miyamoto by seven strokes. After his 66 against England Thursday, he has an 8-under total for two rounds at the home of golf.

Daly shot a 77 on Tuesday, yet still beat Nobuo Serizawa by three strokes. O'Meara completed the American sweep with a five-stroke victory over Hiroyuki Fujita after a 70.

The Americans will meet Sweden on Saturday for a place in the semifinal. The Swedes advanced with a 3-0 victory over England.

Els, who was 2-up at the turn, lost to Sven Struver on the second extra hole after they each carded 4-over 76s in atrocious conditions.

That gave Germany a 2-1 victory after Thomas Gogele edged David Frost at the second extra hole and South Africa's Retief Goosen edged Alex Cejka by one stroke. There also were high-scoring matches with Frost and Gogele each scoring 78 and Goosen winning his match despite a 76.

Price defied the conditions with a 2-under 70 to beat Frenchman Olivier Edmond by eight strokes. But he was playing last and the damage had already been done. Mark McNulty turned in an 81 and lost by 10 strokes to Jean Van de Velde, and Tony Johnstone lost a five-stroke lead after 12 holes to lose by two to Thomas Levet.

Johnstone was still four strokes ahead before he triple-bogeyed both 14 and 15. He finished with a 79 after an 8-over homeward nine of 44.

McNulty hit trouble between 13 and 17 with four bogeys and a double bogey for a 9-over round which had begun with a birdie.

Australia gained its second 3-0 victory of the championship, outplaying South Korea after crushing Argentina on Thursday.

First out for Australia, Craig Parry edged Shin Yong-jin at the first extra hole after they had tied at 75. Stuart Appleby had a 73 to beat Kang Wook-soon by four strokes, and Steve Elkington's par 72 beat Kim Jong-duck by five strokes.

In other groups Friday, New Zealand downed Argentina 2-1, Scotland scored a 2-1 victory over Ireland and Spain edged debutant China 2-1 despite a one-shot loss by Jose Maria Olazabal, who was penalized a stroke on the ninth hole.
