Bunkers no factor for Woods
The Orlando Sentinel

With the win, Tiger Woods now becomes the first player since Jack Nicklaus in 1972 to hold three major championships at the same time, adding the British Open title to last year's PGA Championship and this year's U.S. Open.

David Duval was tied for second until he fell victim to the infamous Road Bunker on the 17th hole. After hitting his second shot in the six-foot deep bunker, Duval took four shots to extricate himself, then two-putted for a quadruple-bogey eight.

“I don't judge it fair or unfair,” he said. “It is what it is. The first one was the best one and that did not get on. From there on you're trying to figure out a way to get out as much as anything. And to top it off, there's virtually no sand in it, so it is hard to get under the ball.”

After his second attempt hit the wall, the ball ended up too close to the wall of the bunker and Duval had to hit it backward with one hand.

Duval's experience on 17 notwithstanding, the steep bunkers did not factor in the ultimate outcome of the championship, as some thought at the beginning of the week.

That was because Woods did not hit into a single one of the 112 bunkers over four rounds.

Low senior was Tom Watson, who finished at 1 over, edging out Irishman Christy O'Connor Jr. by one stroke.

“I made a lot of birdies but I made a lot of errors as well,” Watson said. “I always like playing St. Andrews.”

Although he has won five British Opens, Watson never won one at St. Andrews.

Woods won $759,150 for his sixth PGA Tour win of the year, giving him $5,735,581 for the year.Woods is the sixth player to win the U.S. Open and the British Open in the same year. No player has ever added the PGA Championship to the mix.
