Tiger Woods' father 'doing well' after a second
heart bypass surgery
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Earl Woods, father of Tiger Woods, was expected
to be out of intensive care late today, two days after heart bypass
surgery, a spokeswoman for UCLA Medical Center said.
The younger Woods was at the hospital during the surgery Wednesday
and again the past two days, said spokeswoman Roxanne Moster.
"Woods is doing well, and is expected to be out of intensive
care later today barring any complications," she said. The
operation was performed by cardio-thorasic surgeon Dr. Hillel
Laks, but no details were made public.
The elder Woods had quadruple bypass surgery 10 years ago.
The hospital spokeswoman said it was anticated that Woods be
able to go home about the end of next week.
Woods, 64, was hospitalized with heart problems for four days
in Tulsa, Okla., while his son was playing in the Tour Championship
in October.
The 21-year-old Woods, who has won three times in just 11 tournaments
on the PGA Tour, shot his worst round as a pro - a 78 - the day
his father was hospitalized in Tulsa and finished 21st in that
year-end tournament.
Woods began 1997 by winning season-opening Mercedes Championships,
finishing 18th at the Phoenix Open and second at Pebble Beach.
He played in tournaments in Thailand and Australia the past two
weeks, winning the Thai tournament but finishing seven strokes
back at the Australian Masters.
Woods was not scheduled to play in the Tucson tournament this
week and has planned to play next week in the Nissan Open in Los
Angeles. He had until the end of second round play at Tucson today
to formally enter the L.A. event.
