Phone buddies: Jordan and Woods
CHICAGO (AP) - Michael Jordan says he and Tiger Woods talk
often about such things as handling stardom.
"He just calls to get advice or just to say hello,"
Jordan said. "He's asked questions about how to handle certain
situations (pertaining to stardom), and I've tried to be his friend."
The Chicago Bulls star, who has been trying to encourage more
participation in golf by blacks, hopes the sport appreciates Woods'
feats, including his record-setting Masters victory on Sunday.
"Tiger has taken the game to a much higher magnitude,
which is great for the game of golf," Jordan said. "And
it's also great for African-American athletes, whether they are
in baseball, basketball or football, the sports we mostly excel
in ... (and) it will hopefully give kids another positive outlet
where they can be successful."
Jordan said Woods is in a tougher situation than he is.
"He's in an individual sport," Jordan said. "I
have teammates that, to some degree, I can rely upon when I have
bad days. He doesn't have that. So it's that much tougher for
him."
