ST. ANDREWS, Scotland Tiger Woods' next scheduled PGA Tour
stop is the Aug. 10-13 Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich.
Then it is on to the following week's PGA Championship at Louisville,
Kentucky's Valhalla Golf Club. There, he will attempt to join
Ben Hogan (1953) as the only male golfers to win three legs of
the modern grand slam in the same year.
To be honest, I don't really know much about the course
, Woods said. I saw the telecast when Mark Brooks
won the `96 PGA Championship . That's about it. I really don't
know what to prepare for yet.
Duval on 17
The championship chase was over by then, but David Duval's quadruple-bogey
eight on the 17th hole Sunday will go down as another memorable
moment in the Road Hole's history.
After plugging his 180-yard approach shot in the bunker left of
the green, Duval needed four shots to extricate his ball. The
third shot was a back-handed swipe to get the ball in position
to clear the lip on attempt No. 4.
You're trying to figure out a way to get out as much as
anything, Duval said. We can discuss whether it's
fair or unfair, but you know going in you've got to not hit it
there.
Costly hole
David Duval's quadruple-bogey on No. 17 Sunday, which dropped
him from a second-place tie into a tie for 11th, also cost Duval
his No. 2 World Ranking.
On the basis of Sunday's finishes, Ernie Els moved ahead of Duval
into the No. 2 spot. Duval slipped to No. 3.
More Tiger stripes
More milestones from Tiger Woods' latest victory:
When Woods birdied the par-5 14th hole Sunday, he became
the first player to reach 20 under par in a major championship.
Nick Faldo got to 19 under during the 1990 British Open but bogeyed
the 71st hole to finish 18 under;
It's been 28 years since a player has owned three major
championship trophies at the same time (Woods holds the `99 PGA
and 2000 U.S. Open and British Open titles). Jack Nicklaus held
the `71 PGA, `72 Masters and `72 U.S. Open trophies;
Won his 13th PGA Tour event in his last 23 starts, a winning
percentage of 57 percent;
Increased his season earnings to $5,735,581 and career
earnings to $17,050,710;
Earned his 21st PGA Tour title, tying Gary Player, Craig
Wood, Willie Macfarlane and Dallas' Lanny Wadkins for 25th on
the all-time list.
