ESPN sets record with Tiger
in Canadian Open
BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) Tiger Woods keeps
setting records on and off the course.
ESPN said Tuesday its final-round coverage
of the Canadian Open, where Woods defeated Grant Waite for his
ninth victory of the year, attracted its highest viewership for
a golf telecast in the network's history.
Sunday's final round was seen in 2.74 million
homes, topping ESPN's previous golf record of 2.67 million homes
from the final round of Mercedes Championship in January, when
Woods defeated Ernie Els in a playoff.
The Canadian Open received a 3.45 rating,
second only to the 3.46 rating from the Mercedes, which was shown
in prime time. The four-round coverage of the Canadian Open averaged
a 1.53 rating, nearly double from last year.
Woods won by one stroke with a 22-under
266, the lowest score in the 22 years the Canadian Open has been
played at Glen Abbey. He has set scoring records in his last five
victories, dating to his 15-stroke victory in the U.S. Open.
On ESPN, each rating point represents about
782,000 TV homes.
