A match-by-match look at the singles play
The Providence Journal
Tiger Woods def. Andrew Coltart, 3 and 2.
Coltart did not win a hole. He stayed even through six, before
Woods won 7, 8 and 9, 8 with a dramatic chip in. He also birdied
nine. Every hole on the back side was halved.
Tom Lehman def. Lee Westwood, 3 and 2.
Lehman set the tempo for the day playing almost flawlessly,
bogey-free golf. He birdied both 4 and 5 to take control a 2-up
lead. Westwood birdied seven but Lehman won both 9 and 10 with
pars and 13 with a bird.
Hal Sutton def. Darren Clarke, 4 and 2.
Sutton completed an outstanding week with aother strong effort.
Clarke birdied one, Sutton birdied two and won three and four
with pars to go 2 up. A bird at 6 got his lead to 3 up and Sutton
had 3 1/2 points for the week.
Phil Mickelson def. Jarmo Sandelin, 4 and 3.
Sandelin, who had not played all week, feel behind by two after
four but won the sixth. He was still down one at the turn before
Mickelson won 10, 11 and 12 even though he was 1 over for that
threhole stretch.
Davis Love III def. Jean Van de Velde, 6 and 4.
Love was as strong as anyone all day, going 4 under for the
14 holes. Van de Velde was within two at the turn before Love
won the last four holes of the match.
David Duval def. Jesper Parnevik, 5 and 4.
Duval, showing more emotion than ever before, birdied two,
won three with a par and four with a bird, and never looked back
against the tired Parnevik. He made it a rout by winning 6, 7
and 8 to go 6 up.
Padraig Harrington def. Mark O'Meara, 1 up.
The closest match of the day. Neither played led by more than
one hole. Harrington missed a short putt to win the 14th when
the match was even. O'Meara missed a similar putt on 15. O'Meara
made a clutch putt on 17 but went from bunker to bunker to lose
18.
Steve Pate def. Miguel Angel Jiminez, 2 and 1.
The key hole was the 12th, which Pate won to move 2 up, the
biggest lead to that point. Pate birdied the par 5 14th to get
to 3 up and hung on from there.
Jose Maria Olazabal and Justin Leonard halved.
The dramatic match which decided the issue. Leonard, down 4
after 11, won 12, 13, 14 and 15 to pull even, then clinched the
cup with his improbable 45-footer for bird on 17.
Colin Montgomerie def. Payne Stewart, 1 up.
Montgomerie was 3 up after seven as he birdied three holes.
Stewart fought back by taking 8 and 9 and finally pulled even
at 15, after a bird at 14 and winning par at 15. Montgomerie won
18 after the issue already had been settled.
Jim Furyk def. Sergio Garcia, 4 and 3.
Perhaps the upset of the day. Furyk was strong throughout,
winning 4 and 9 to lead by 2 at the turn. Pate won 11 and 12.
Garcia never won a hole.
Paul Lawrie def. Jeff Maggert, 4 and 3.
Lawrie was in control all the way. He steadily built a four
hole lead by the turn. He lost 13, but got it right back at 14
and cruised to the victory.
