Woods named Sports Star of the Year
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Tiger Woods is a Masters champion, a PGA player of the year and the golf tour's first $2 million winner in a calendar year.
Now, his fame has gone beyond golf. Woods was announced as the winner of the "Sports Star of the Year Award" on Friday.
The award is for athletes who combine excellence in their sports with significant charitable endeavors, and he will receive it March 1 at a dinner in Los Angeles.
The dinner raised $200,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association last winter when Shaquille O'Neal of the Los Angeles Lakers won the award.
Previous winners include Wayne Gretzky, Rod Carew, Jimmy Connors, George Foreman, Joe Montana, Steve Young and Magic Johnson.
Johnson will present the award to Woods, and also serve as host of the dinner that will include a fund-raising auction of sports memorabilia, uniforms, trip packages and sports event tickets.
